I haven't been to the Dakotas, Michigan, Wisconsin, or Minnesota so I can't speak for them. The red area is farm country people usually want to escape from. The blue area is mountainous. Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho are where people go when they want to leave society. Oregon and Washington is beautiful country, but many hipsters and heroin addicts live there.
