It's just as dumb as using "Asian" only to refer to Indians/Pakis.

It's completely arbitrary really, Brits use "Asian" for South Asians because that is the largest immigration group from Asia they have and Americans use "Asian" for Chinese/Japs/Vietnamese etc. because they have more from that region.

Also in Germany we use Asian for people from East Asia as well since there is more cultural contact with them historically and through media than with Indians.
