And Venezuela gdp gave them a big boost. Is not that is a bad ranking, it's just that the things that are measured don't equal quality of life, first world status, or if people is happy, just some extremely basic stuff. It's not a good thing to compare two countries but is a good ranking to study groups.

It's because HDI always completely recalculates the ranking of countries in that year and the years before.

For example, Singapore is shown as only dropping one spot instead of gaining 6 spots because the newest calculation is saying "We believe we were wrong the year before on where they were really ranked, they should have been 4th in 2014 instead of 11th, and dropped 1 spot in the next year".

This is actually a good way to calculate it because they admit that the formula isn't infallible and regularly makes mistakes instead of clinging to previously incorrect projections.

Argentina was wealthier than Chile like since 1880 to our 2001-2002 crisis. They have been outperforming us for a long time, but as recently as the 1980s, Chile being wealthier than Argentina would have been a crazy idea for most people.

I think Argentina will get a worse ranking next year because of the subsidy cuts and recession of 2016.
