I think this happens a lot actually. You can basically use accountrement in two ways: to say "all of a soldier's equipment except weapons and clothing" or to say "personal item/possession". You could just say possession or item and people will know what you mean, a non-native might then use accoutrement to the second way of using it, not realising it is never used.

I have a feeling that it was only used when talking about particular supplies during wartime. As it seems it's rarely used as singular, always plural. Then it quickly dropped out of use, or maybe it's still used by militaries internally.

I've heard plenty of people use spurned, you should say *in North American English. I'm fairly certain I've heard a few people use ingratiate too. Maybe only presenters/hosts and politicians.
