Slavs were a fraternal institution. They captured Albanians, Germanics, Balts, Finns etc in battle and then offered them a chance to join them.
Slavs probably wouldn't have been as successful if they had been more ethnocentric.

Yes, but Slavs as an ethnic group had to exist for all of that to happen. The thing is that the Slavic ethnic group and the linguistic group aren't always aligned. There are non--Slavs who speak a Slavic language, as well as Slavs who speak non-Slavic language.
