The model of the small girl was Johanna Kokkonen, who worked as a servant girl in the local household Järnefelt pictured her as bit more rugged that what she according to the photo actually was. Järnefelt added soot to the girls face whilst making the hair look a bit more rugged. Also in the painting the girls stomach has swollen from hunger and eating bark bread although this wasn't the case in reality.

Stańczyk (the jester) is sitting alone in a dark room, while a ball, hosted by the royal family, is in full swing in the neighbouring hall.
His appearance is unlike that one would expect in a jester – gloomy, deep in thought.
His seriousness is reinforced by his accessories: his marotte lies discarded on the floor, but the holy medallion of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa pokes on the chest. The wrinkled carpet at Stanczyk's feet could have been formed by his collapsing heavily into the chair upon reading the letter, or through a nervous shifting of the feet thereafter. On the table lies a letter likely announcing that Poland has lost Smolensk to the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, causing Stańczyk's sorrow and reflection on his fatherland's fate. The letter seems to have been discarded by some official, and only the jester realizes its significance – while the rulers are partying, and celebrating. It is interesting to note that the letter bears the year 1533 (A.d. MDXXXIII) and the name "Samogitia", a province of the Commonwealth. Another symbol, a lute, symbol of glory, is being carried by a midget, stereotyped as a person of low stature and morale in Matejko's time; this suggests a decline of the Jagiellon dynasty's fortunes. The window is thrown - or was blown - open, ruffling the tablecloth and alluding to an upset of the present order.
Through the open window, the darkened profile of Wawel Cathedral in Krakow is visible - the site of the coronation of Polish kings. Next to it, a comet is seen – a portent of ill fortune.
The imagery of downfall is completed with the inclusion of the three stars of Orion's Belt seen above and to the left of the cathedral spire. In Greek mythology, Orion was a powerful hunter blinded by ego and his own greatness, but was ultimately brought down by the pinprick of a scorpion's sting.

The slaying of bishob Henry

The story tells that when Lalli returned home one day, his wife Kerttu informed him that the bishop recently visited their house and had departed without paying for his food, drink, or fodder. When Lalli heard of this, he became enraged and left to pursue the bishop. At Bishop Henry's bidding, his entourage fled and hid in a nearby forest, while Lalli decapitated Henry with an axe.

Lalli took the bishop's hat from his severed head and cut off the bishop's finger to take his ring. The hat became fused to Lalli's head and when he tried to remove it, it tore his scalp off with it. When Lalli tried to remove the bishop's ring from his finger, it likewise tore his finger off. Afterward, Lalli drowned in the lake Köyliönjärvi. Per the bishop's last wish, his body parts were collected by his servants and transported with oxen. Where the oxen stopped became the site of the first church in Finland.

Obviously a story to get legitimacy for the catholic church here. There's records of finns still practising paganism in 1600s in some areas. The pope even wrote a letter about it "Gravis admodum" or "quite serious" Where he cried about finns being annoying since they requested military defense always promising they'll convert properly to christianity but when the assisting soldiers had left we just got back to our old religion and told the pope's men fuck off.
