I visited Saint Petersburg last year for a business trip.

I can only talk from own experience, but I felt very safe when walking around in Moscow with my friends. Much more so than London/Paris/Rome.
Muscovites are probably better at English than most other areas. The younger people seem to have a decent grasp of it, but not many are very fluent in it. Older people will generally avoid speaking English.

Ok, I don't know how it is NOW in Russia, but since the 80's Polish mafia ware stealing cars, mostly in Germany, to Poland.
Than in the early 90's borders opened, and they started stealing even more cars, mostly in Germany. A lot of them started to be sent to Russia, since some people started to have money there, and because poles and ruskies started to trade & know each other.
In the 00's poles started to buy more new cars too, so now cars stolen in poland ware being sent to Russia too.

Russians should really do something to diversify fix their economy, we don't built a country on the exportation of oil, gas, and weapons. They have the potential to be great because Russia has a lot of ressources, white and intelligent people and a demography which is risen up back.

We had a tv show here that asked the exact same question. The architects that designed them wanted to make a lot more beautiful and comfortable buildings, but they couldn't because all the parts were massproduced in huge factories in Russia, so there wasn't much playing room for the architects.
