In reality, Haiku exist using 17 morae, but us dumb people tend to just use 17 syllables because it's easier and people not interested in linguistics don't generally know what a mora is.

Well, with such a low amount of information per syllable in Japanese, and syllables containing multiple morae often, and the constraint being on morae, yeah, they going to be pretty simple.

There are also other concepts in Haiku we could be using to make ours better, but most of us aren't going to bother.

Syllables in general aren't that hard concept, but as wikipedia states:
