Why do Kazakhs and Uzbeks eat so much salt?
The only way to preserve food was to salt it down and they've had much salt coming with merchnts from Astrakhan. It was probably relatively cheap. There is a lake Baskunchak near Astrakhan, it is like Dead Sea. I'm probably mistaken though.
I would have though Ukraine would have the highest salt consumption of all the former Soviet republics.
