You are correct. To learn English you essentially have to learn Latin, old German and French. English is long overdue for a spelling and grammar overhaul. My own country, Indonesia and Brunei did this for Bahasa in the 70's if I am not mistaken, to standardise spelling. We have diverged again in terms of vocabulary, with the Indons being happy to adopt Western loan words but Malaysia being more conservative.
