Also, the "café con leche" bit was actually not so bad since at least in the US we use the Spanish name for the style of coffee that she's talking about, since "coffee with milk" could refer to many slightly different varieties. You are confusing "sounds" with "letters". You are struggling the fact that these letters represent different sounds in your own language. The same can be said of Spanish: it is 99% consistent when it comes to letters and pronunciation, as opposed to English. What would strike a close-minded person odd about Magyar is not a lack of consistency, but the fact that the letters are used differently than they would be in his own language. Once you wrap your head around the fact that different languages use the same alphabet in different ways, the road to learning opens.

I'm a Latvian immigrant. My secondary language is English and I'm fluent in Russian. I've lived here for 14 years since I was 8 and I can tell you, there are far more Brits who speak a foreign language here than any other Anglo country.
