It's complicated. The gist of the problem at hand is that people want a flag to represent their culture and identity, and because of its historical significance to us the Confederate Flag naturally fills that role, and introducing something else artificially that doesn't have that significance isn't going to work. The reason why we get so pissed about people attacking it is because nobody suggests an alternative, they just want to strip us of the right to have a flag that represents us at all and therefore symbolically we cease to be something special or different and just be generic Americans.

The solution is reinventing the flag. To portray it as a symbol of Southern culture and people of all races and not of some extinct state that briefly existed 150 years ago. That's not going too well, obviously.
