The societies are currently pretty shittily implemented, you get absolutely no bonuses or events for being a leader, you can't ask favours from those of lesser rank etc. only the satanists/assassins have those sort of options and even then you don't have to be the leader.

Between the deteriorating quality of CK2 DLC and the HoI series, I honestly believe Paradox has given up on making good games. I've played HoI 4, HoI 3 and DH (in that order) and I honestly believe that the HoI got worse over time. They went from a solid game with some grating but forgivable flaws (DH) to utter autismo mode (HoI 3) to a WW2 map painting simulator (HoI 4).

Finally started up that Bavandids campaign, la's. The new secretly profess faith option makes it easy as hell, which isn't surprising given that you start with a 6 province duchy with claims on your weaker neighbour and that Moslems can conquer single provinces with no cooldown and a reasonable mana cost. It's 848 and I've founded my Persian kingdom, now all I've got to do is keep the peace between my mixed Zoroastrian and Moslem subjects and keep my butthurt Zoroastrian kin from assassinating all of my sons on one hand and my Moslem vassals from converting all of my Zoro provinces. Though I know the entire realm will turn Zoroastrian through and through as soon as I revert. Love the retinue nerf, even though my exploitation of giving my successor silk route provinces and inheriting them with the crown, thus bypassing the trade post limit, has left me with enough money to hire a fuck you 10,000 man doomstack of Turkish horse archer when need be. Will keep on going at least until Khan shows up, though his performance may turn out to be underwhelming, depending on how well the Tocharians weather the years.

I have to contest that. Compared to pretty much any HoI game, warfare is pretty clunky in Victoria 2. The game is supposed to end in WW1 but you just never can capture that feeling of massive armies forming defensive lines and pushing eachother back and forward, trying to break through, encircle etc. However I think the Victoria 2 system in terms of diplomacy and industry is pretty good. I just wish there was better inter-GP diplomacy and that the industry system was more transparant, but other than those small nitpicks and the military element a good game. My ideal Victoria game would have DH style combat.

I have to disagree here as well. EU 4 is a good entry level GSG. HoI 3 however has the opposite problem: way, way, WAY too much micromanagement. Note that I don't say complexity because it merely adds a shitton of command structures that give marginal to no benefits so managing them becomes a boring chore. Compared to DH it adds zero strategic options. What HoI 3 does do really, really well is diplomacy and espionage, I'll give you that. But that game is just way too boring because of that fucked up OoB system and it makes starting a game just incredibly tedious. I can't even begin to imagine the nightmare that is playing the Soviet Union in that game.

I'm going to be controversial here, but that OoB system makes HoI 3 worse than HoI 4 in my eyes.

DH > Vic2 > [ POWER GAP ] > CK2 > EU 4 > HoI 4 >= HoI 3.
A shame, I really wanted to like HoI 3 (mostly because DH's interface is outdated and its lack of diplomacy a waste).

There's your problem, mate. From what I've been told, Germany is pretty easy if you (unlike what happened historically) focus on taking out Russia first and then zerg into France.

I played France, failed a few times and then succeeded.
When I failed, I made the mistake of trying to create new military units when France already has enough.
The time I won, I finally figured out France's real problem: outdated equipment. I put most of my industrial capacity into upgrading troops until they could match the Germans (I also rushed some troops into Belgium, into the two provinces that are just behind a river for maximum defensibility, then slowly but surely worked my way up to the banks of the Rhine and basically sat out the rest of the war there enjoying nice defenses).

So yeah, don't play AH. It historically failed for a very good reason, and those reasons are somewhat represented in the game (small army, outdated equipment and low IC to update those units with). Try Germany, they're in the best position to win.

Idk, it's just that I like to roleplay on my first playthough of these games. My first CKII one was as Asturias on the Charlememe start and I manage to form Hispania and Portugal on another run. with EUIV, I tried to form the Netherlands and did quite well too.

Invading serbia is somewhat easy, the problem is having two fronts to fight at once the Italians inevitably join the clusterfuck, moving troops around takes a shitload of time. I feel like I should understand how army composition works and how to engage battles mostly

I understand, but if you're going to play AH in DH you'll have to roleplay a failed empire on the verge of collapse that's fighting for its very survival against much better equiped enemies. Leave that for when you fully grasp the game.

How do you move your troops around? You just rightclick? Do you know how "strategic redeployment" works?

Your troops will "disappear" from the map for a moment but will appear in the province where they're supposed to arrive much, much faster (in terms of roleplay, this is the difference between letting your troops march somewhere and transporting them there with trucks and trains).
