it has a reason, it claims lands you own
losing a war doesn't mean losing the game, as long as a member of your family holds any title you are fine
try starting as one of the iberian kings, it's better for practice and learning the game

If you play as France try to have good relation with HRE at the beginning send gift and marrry your descents to the Emperor, and his descents.

Then, you can invade Spain to extend your domain, and finally wait the collapse of the HRE(Civil war) to conquer it.

I recently played a smashing game of CKII, starting out as Iceland in 769. I conquered the Isle of Man, making it my raiding base, divested myself of Iceland through gavelkind, conquered Ireland, and then went for a mad dog invasion of all the English and Welsh realms in sequential order, beating back the filthy continentals in 50 years of constant war, at the end of which my brother and vassal offhandedly conquered the whole of Pictland to boot, leaving me in control of the Isles. I then instituted Normanization policies, and converted to INRI because a huge Anglo-Saxon religious rebellion caught me off guard while I was off helping the King of Norway conquer Sweden. Tl;dr, I eventually switched culture to English, crusaded my way via Andalusia and Jerusalem to Egypt, from where I began my conquest of the trade hubs on the Indian Sea, in which I was greatly abetted by the Pope's obsession with conquering Kamarupa, and founded the East India Company, a vassal republic, by 1250. I then instituted a colonial pike & shot army of 2/3 archers and 1/3 pikemen as a measure against the fearsome War Elephants. Alas, the infamy mechanic and prevented me from conquering the whole of India by game's end, and I had to content myself with owning most of the coastal areas.

But I am still not HC enough to play as the Bavandids at the 769 start.
