It's hard if you aren't prepared to commit to it 100%
You need to involve yourself with Japanese media (read books, watch movies, anime if you are homosexual etc...)
Also it helps if you have a natural talent for learning stuff.
Also I'm assuming that you want to learn fluent Japanese.

it really depends, some people say it's quite easy and some very difficult

not difficult just takes vast amount of time

We Romance Languages speakers probably have it best when it comes to learning Japanese. Pronunciation/phonetics is quite similar to ours and the sentence structure is in many ways surprisingly reminiscent of Latin, too.

Been learning it on my own for about 8 years now. It's quite easy and fub once you get to its inner workings. Give it a try and see how it works.
