the vast majority of people in NI aren't particularly religious
Anyway it just so happens that the largest political party (DUP) was founded by a protestant zealot and preacher who went on to make his own protestant sect, and stacked his party with religious fundamentalists from his church. The party became the mainstream unionist/loyalist party so ordinary unionists (who are also supposedly protestants) vote for them and in turn the DUP's fundamentalist religious values are overrepresented politically.
Lads, I know I shouldn't be, but I was having a browse of /r/ireland there to see how they were reacting to the Strike protests today. Came across this wonderful bit of logic regarding whether fathers should be allowed to have a say in abortion decisions:
>They both had sex which they know could lead to pregnancy, and if a child is born they must both take care of it. That's the cost of sex. Don't like it? Get a vasectomy. Don't punish the child.
Okay, don't punish the child for the mistakes of the parents. Makes sense.
>"But", you may cry, "what about EQUALITY!? She gets to choose to have the baby, but he doesn't?"
Well, women have been crying about equality for decades now, so we've been led to believe that it's pretty important.
>No, she gets to choose whether or not to carry the baby. Nobody has the right to impose a medical procedure on another person, and until a man can gestate and give birth, it will always be the woman's right to choose.
But what about not punishing the child?
Essentially this twisted individual acknowledges that pregnancy as a possible outcome of sex is implicitly consented to by performing the act. but only the woman is allowed to "punish" the child. The man just has to suck it up and do whatever the empowered womyn tells him to do, whether it be see his offspring killed or be forced to pay indefinitely for a child he doesn't want.
>>72052643
why don't you fuck off and argue with them there you tedious wanker
>>72052643
One of the worst things we allowed in society was for men to abandon their children. Just like a slut shouldn't be allowed to murder a child, a father shouldn't be allowed to walk away from raising it.
If you want to argue it's a woman's right to murder the infant, it's also the father's right to walk away.
>>72052611
>because you have to pay for teamspeak servers

The whole point of this site is anonymity, Discord shatters that mentality by introducing identities and voice chat.

>>72052729
Correct.
"Nobody can impose a medical procedure", they'll say (except for blood transfusions and vaccinations on people whose religious belief contradicts theirs), but they have zero limitations on the impositions they'll put on men to avoid putting any responsibility on the shoulders of women.

The Atlantean empire invaded the homeland of the Sargassians. Sargasso was planted by the Atlanteans due to its mineral wealth, and the native Sargassians were exiled to the then sparsely populated island of Ireland.
Unfortunately the foolish Atlanteans over-exploited Sargasso's mineral wealth and over the centuries the ocean reclaimed the native Sargassian land. Now all that remains is a sea in their name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sargasso_Sea

Secondly, I meant that when we wish to pass a law as country, or in this case amend the constitution, we need to consider why this has to be done.
In the case of the right to abort one could easily argue for it using arguments about situations where health concerns might indicate it, or even that since the embryo is not fully conscious, if it is to be born in a family that can't/doesn't want to sustain and raise the child it will not only make its life miserable but also the family's/parent's and possibly become detrimental to society in the future as a dysfunctional adult.
However, most people that marched today, marched as part of a "women's equality/power" movement.
"I want the law to change because we are all special little snowflakes and we deserve what we want" is not a good argument.
"A woman has the right to chose" is not an argument, it is but a feeble attempt at emotional blackmail and of absolutely no use to the rest of society.
I think it is wrong to continue encouraging what is essentially a mindless mob of people swayed by whatever the current fad or pseudomoral meme of today is, and supporting a cause without ever thinking it through.
This type of thinking SHOULD NOT be encouraged. When society rids itself of this doltish semblance of ideology, then we can finally do the things that need be done.
That being said, abortion being illegal is fucking stupid. Considering the country has already voted for gay marriage what moral pretence can one possibly have against abortion?

Your ideal is sound enough but you have to understand that people who get into (and stay) in power are the kind that will not stay strong against public backlash
It takes almost no-one at all to make a member of the goverment to change their mind, all they have to think is that they might not get voted in again/not get their cushy job in a private company after their time. The only way to change things is through protest, and there's not enough people who both have the right idea and the will to actually go out and protest, so one has to rope in some idiots to pad out the numbers. This means the reason for the message is lost, but so long as the message gets through it's worthy it.
>>72060976
You are correct, I got tired after the long post and got lazy.
It is not the same, I fallaciously assumed in my mind that a person that doesn't object to gay marriage (which is usually due to religious beliefs) couldn't possibly object to getting rid of something that is not yet living and might prove detrimental.

I agree with you but "HEEM" is a funny meem.
If I'm reading your post correctly, you're basically against democracy and populism, which is a good sentiment. People don't look for truth in the evaluation of ideas, they evaluate packages of memes that they passively encounter through their social experience and their consumption of media, weighing them up in terms of emotionalist rhetoric and personal gain through the impact of the policy and the "socially-approved" perception of being a supporter of it.
>That being said, abortion being illegal is fucking stupid. Considering the country has already voted for gay marriage what moral pretence can one possibly have against abortion?
It's a shame you can't see why it SHOULD be illegal, but if you're wondering why it is, then the obvious answer is that those laws were written in a different time.
>>72061085
>It is not the same, I fallaciously assumed in my mind that a person that doesn't object to gay marriage (which is usually due to religious beliefs) couldn't possibly object to getting rid of something that is not yet living and might prove detrimental.
Religion is the strongest "meme package" that provides coherent reasons for opposing both those things, but even the explicit, somewhat honestly logic-oriented liberal theories and rhetoric (since liberalism as an ideology isn't really coherent) lead to an opposition to abortion.
Basically it boils down to the difference between giving a gold medal to a bowl of soup that has been shat into, and taking a bowl of soup and pouring it down the sink.

I am very much for democracy and completely against populism. People most often do not evaluate packages of memes for personal gain, if that were the case we would have democracy.
Perhaps, if we use personal gain in the sense of "whatever I FEEL right now" then maybe. In general however your evaluation of people judging things based on an emotionalist rhetoric I believe is spot on.
In my point of view personal morality should often come second to the betterment of society. As such I usually weigh things based on what I envision/want society to become.
As such I believe that abortion should be legal, using the aforementioned arguments.
If you were talking about gay marriage, I disagree on a moral and philosophical level. I consider the moral part (my basic emotions and values of what is wrong and what is right) to be of little value. The philosophical part however, as I believe it pertains to society, is of much greater importance and worth of note.

They do though. You're confusing policy for "meme packages". It's easy to understand "us vs them", or the more current meme of "freedom vs oppression/regression". It's not so easy and nobody fucking bothers to digest the vast amounts of policies out there because there's no point while mass psychology dominates and no real way to vote on specific laws 99% of the time outside maybe Switzerland.
>In my point of view personal morality should often come second to the betterment of society. As such I usually weigh things based on what I envision/want society to become.
That's a bit of a contradiction. By your own admission your own moral views are what you demand for society.

What do you mean? Moral beliefs are intrinsic in philosophy. If you support "gay marriage" you are basing your political position on your morals.
And if there is any sense in which "philosophy" independent of morals existed, I can think of no reason why "gay marriage" bears any great "philosophical" justification, besides the (false) belief that heterosexuality and homosexuality are equal or analogous, or else the liberal/utilitarian moral belief that "liberty" (license) in this matter or marks of approval from the state add to the happiness of society.

Freemasons (now) allow nominal Catholics to become members. But the esoteric practices, deist underpinnings, and "ecumenism" means the RCC doesn't allow its members to be Freemasons.
They were viewed by Catholics in France at least and probably the rest of Continental Europe as being somewhat like what /pol/ thinks da Jooish conspiracy is, though with more justification. Some French fedora published a lot of lies about being a freemason and Satanic practices there, and then went "ha ha I troled u" when people took him at face value, proving... something.

The Swiss have an amazing system in place and I admire them for it. The ancient Greeks had a similar system, which would be possibly dysfunctional today due to the scale of our countries. Using the modern definition of democracy I may not be democratic. I will attempt to explain.
>That's a bit of a contradiction. By your own admission your own moral views are what you demand for society.
Again you are correct. What I meant to say was, I, as most humans, have a "visceral" response to new things and new information (maybe even things we already know). This emotional response is often fear of the unknown and the new, and an attempt to conserve what we know and have adapted to. I think it is due to a need for conserving mental energy but that is beyond the point.
If you come from a background where homosexuality was frowned upon or stigmatised it is understandable that your first subconscious response to that would be negative. For most people that is where the process of forming an ideological position ends.
My "true morality" , is what I, in the best of my ability, envision for society and the parts of life and responses to events that can bring such a future to existence.
>What ones?
Sparing society a dysfunctional adult, sparing a family a dysfunctional life, sparing a woman pain and potential death. All of these at the cost of a few cells. We humanely kill dogs which are far more conscious that an 10000 cell embryo.

Marriage in society has a twofold value.
1) Is to celebrate the bonding of a couple
2) (Most importantly) to officiate the joining of two people in terms of wealth and towards the law and the rest of the society.
I believe people should be free to love whomever they chose. Celebration of the said love in circles of your friends and family should be allowed.
However in the eyes of the law it is an entirely different matter. Marriage as we have today has a few functionalities in terms of the law.
It allows couples to get tax returns (which exists as means to encourage people to form families and in turn produce more people, the currency of society) and assist one another in legal obligations as well as whatever might arise.
Gay couples do not produce new people. They can adopt, which in turn is of benefit to society, but this is a separate matter and should be examined as such.
I find it unnecessary to provide the same incentives to gay couples as such all under the umbrella of marriage.
Furthermore and although it is not entirely related to marriage, adoption and raising of children in non-standard environments has relatively unknown effects and is not widely documented. I am uncertain whether we should mindlessly proceed towards allowing adoption without considering/investigating the potential effects.
>>72062612
>Again you are correct. What I meant to say was, I, as most humans, have a "visceral" response to new things and new information (maybe even things we already know).
Quite a different thing from "morals" and not something that separates you from the high-level philosophical opponents of homosexuality, though if they do find it viscerally reprehensible, it's not really possible to externally distinguish the two, and complaining about visceral feelings per se is a fallacy the pro-"tolerance" types use to disarm all opposition.
>If you come from a background where homosexuality was frowned upon or stigmatised it is understandable that your first subconscious response to that would be negative. For most people that is where the process of forming an ideological position ends.
That assumes people are blank slates towards it though, and that disgust at it is not ingrained through evolution or instinct. Funnily enough the argument is thrown around that it's the opposite when someone is enthralled rather than disgusted by it, really makes you think. I think it's mostly the opposite to be honest, especially for someone to be opposed to homosexuality in today's culture, it's not something that is brainwashed into people, quite the opposite: almost the entire education/psychology/media establishments are organised to program people to accept it, and it's legally coercively imposed in a lot of places, Ireland included, to relatively soft degrees.
>My "true morality" , is what I, in the best of my ability, envision for society and the parts of life and responses to events that can bring such a future to existence.
That's not your morality, formally speaking. That's your vision, which is guided by your morality.

>Sparing society a dysfunctional adult
Abortion is propounded in order to elevate the status of dysfunctional adults and make life more convenient for them. Abortion's psychological effects (and possibly the physiological effects on children the mother has after the abortion) also produce dysfunctional adults (of a socially destructive kind) more reliably than birthing those children which are targeted by abortion does. Additionally those children who are targeted by abortion might not actually be "dysfunctional" in any sense and are simply surplus to social or economic permittances.
>sparing a family a dysfunctional life
Most "families" which would be having abortions are already dysfunctional by their own making. And in the case of the burden of a disabled child, when it is not actually a minor burden but instead a severe one, there are alternatives to alleviate this burden that do not involve murder, such as hospices or other homes.
>All of these at the cost of a few cells
Defined in material terms, you are a few cells.
"Consciousness" is also being treated as a replacement for the Christian idea of a soul, which it is not. It is (by your reckoning at least) a material phenomenon in the same category as cells.
>We humanely kill dogs which are far more conscious that an 10000 cell embryo.

And abortion is not humane.

A ceremonial value which has no meaning to the state and no value to society.
If it's to encourage further such pairings, it has no value since homosexuals do not produce children.
>inb4 muh adoption
Homosexuals should not be able to purchase children to use as fashion accessories or worse.
>2) (Most importantly) to officiate the joining of two people in terms of wealth and towards the law and the rest of the society.

Why? Your opinion? That doesn't make it real.
>kindness in whatever way we can to the beings we kill for sustenance
So if we ate aborted fetuses, it'd be necessary to kill them more kindly than is currently done (which would probably entail gassing them after they're born)?
>implying the Bilderbergers NWO don't already eat aborted fetuses
>And it goes for abortion that it's just basic human decency to not kill another person
Why? If you abort a fetus you've killed another person. And you haven't established any real ground for why it's wrong to kill a person if all they are is a particular arrangement of physical matter.
>course that's me talking like a poof but there you go
Yeah.
>And then you have the actual arguements of the stress and grief the mother would have if the baby actually was conscious
>"Child murdered, murderer hardest hit"
But what if the woman wanted to kill the child when it was conscious? There's no reason for her to not do that. Your whole point is a hypothetical case where a woman would not WANT to abort, not a reason for why she should be allowed to abort.
