Not exactly. What we had was something called "the mid-atlantic accent", which sounds like a weird blend between northeastern American English and British English. It started out thanks to weird northeastern prep schools trying to teach kids to sound "proper", but quickly turned into its own accent, leading to this bizarre, distinct accent that shows up in our media and politics more or less from 1920 to 1950. A big part of the reason why radio and early cinema used that accent is that the signal and audio quality was often so bad, that they had to almost "over-pronounce" certain words. As audio quality got better, the need to use that accent faded.

It's really cool stuff. Listen to FDR's speech about "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself", if you played that to any American or Canadian today we'd agree he sounds like a European doing a bad imitation of a northeastern American or southern British accent.
