The chinese people, from back in ancient times, identified as huaxiazu-- xia culture people. After the han dyntasty the also called themselves hanren, then after the tang dynasty they were sometimes called tangren, and only after 1912 did zhongguo become the name of the country and zhongguoren meant chinese people, but that and all those other names also refer to the same group of people.

Why does the Taiwan national anthem sound so much more cultured than the PRC anthem?

Chinese Communist anthem has no real tune to it and is just generic patriotic chanting, Taiwan's anthem is real classy and memorable.
