Many of them had their own currencies for a while. Example of the tendencies of those small nations: Zimbabwe had it's own currency up until 2009 and it changed to Chinese Yuan in 2015 (at least as an alternate currency, now it's the main). They changed because China actually invests in Zimbabwe and is more important to them than the U.S.
