Oh right. Well, I disagree with the claim that Großdeutsche Lösung would have "Made Germany Great again" too. Firstly, during the time of the "German Question", Austria was in decline whereas Prussia was resurgent (see the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 for evidence of this). This made Prussia a far better candidate to lead any unification of Germany. Furthermore, from 1867 onwards, the Dual Monarchy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire meant that Austria couldn't join a united Germany without Hungary also joining. This was a major point of contention for German Confederation because Hungary was an ethnic clusterfuck with very few German-speaking peoples. Territorial holdings of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the Balkans and Romania would have left the new German empire directly exposed to the brewing tensions and frequent conflicts in those regions throughout the 19th century.

On paper, Grossdeutschland does indeed seem to be the far better option; a bigger, stronger empire that dominates a huge swathe of Central and Eastern Europe. But this Empire would have been dominated by a weakened Austria constantly at odds with Prussia, religious division (Catholic Austria vs. Protestant Prussia), highly prone to territorial conflicts and uprisings, and would not have been a truly "German" empire.

Well, there's no denying that many of the states joined the Northern Conferderation based on purely pragmatic reasons, but as with many things in history this was swept under the rug by Bismarck and co. What is telling though is how Bismarck was able to stoke patriotic fervor for the German nation state amongst the few hold-out states outside the Confederation during the Franco-Prussian war. This patriotic surge (and the subsequent Prussian victory) was fundamental to the successful foundation of the German Empire.

Ever played Pride of Nations? [I haven't, even though I bought it].

I got it on Bundlestars a few months ago, it was too good a bundle to pass up, it was like 7 euro for a dozen turbo-autist strategy games, which appealed more to me back then, down something like 90%.

Now I only casually play CK2 and am looking forward to Stellaris becoming less boring when they make expansion packs for it.

Admittedly the Russian military command made some really bizarre decisions during the Crimean war. But if you compare Russia during the 7 Years War where they were never able to decisively beat Prussia due to chronic logistical problems to the Russia that was able to chase Napoleon across the entire European continent, the difference is stark. They also fought well in a number of wars against the Ottomans throughout the 1800's.

True - especially after the Prussian defeat in the Battle of Kunersdorf. But Kunersdorf was only the last in a litany of Russian victories on the Eastern front. Yet despite all these victories during the war, Russian logistical problems prevented them from ever delivering the decisive blow. Essentially, if the Russians had invested in decent logistics, the 7 years war could have been over in far less than 7 years.

The Miracle of the House of Brandenburg is one of my favourite historical events because it was just so bizarre.
