I'm not quite sure but I heard soju is just literally watered down ethanol (that's why it's so dirt cheap?).
There's no point for us in buying such low quality liquor when we can drink finer quality genuine spirit which is shochu.

There are two types of Soju, diluted one and distilled one.
Former is literally diluted alcohol made from cheap stuffs(Tapioca, potato, etc) with chemical sweetener added.
It's so dirt cheap and poor fags usually drink it.
Most of soju stuffs sold at grocery store are former.

Latter is traditional spirit and some brands are quite expensive.
Though small store don't sell it.

Its really easy to drink for its % so I say good. Still prefer straight vodka though

There is also historical background behind this.
Former president Park-Jung Hee enacted 양곡관리법(糧穀管理法, grain control act) in 1965 banning use of rice for brewery purpose.
Since then, only diluted Soju are marketed, and become symbol of drinks of the poor.
