Seen many posters discussing their heritage, but the question is how do they know it? Which Institution shall I go and which one you go to know more about your past?
In here every person for last 500 years has been documented in church archives so why dont you find out can the church help you, I could track my ancestors all the way to year 1506
Generally the family 'work' to keep the history alive. My father's family, for example, until my father's generation is 100% ethnic italian and they always used to share histories about their members who was born in Italy and the ones who emigrated to the newer generations. Plus, we have some local immigration registry still conserved.

we don't have church archives but we have some state system to register marriage, birth etc ("Civil registration", we call it ZAGS)
also older staff like "Home books' records" exists
its possible to request the information about you
're ancestors if you want, you will get copies of birth certs etc probably some other info
but its just official information, there are other ways too
personally i wouldn't find shit without the internet

Which part of the country are you from?
I could trace my family back to 1635, to a castle scribe in Viipuri
