London's importance is overplayed. It's not anymore important than Paris is for the colonial legacy both cities represent (the Commonwealth and Le monde francophonie). While I don't like New York and prefer Los Angeles, New York is recognized as the capital of the whole world. Someone from India might look at London as a sort of external capital and someone from Algeria might look at Paris in the same light, but the Londoner and Parisian looks to New York.

A lot of the largest companies also have offices in Manhattan because it's just good for business to have a little something in New York City.
