Why do so many people dislike the EU?

Because my best friend, UK, left the EU, now I have no reason to like it.

Every time Europe united you ended up invading us. It's genetic memory at this point.

Because they like the illusion of self-control.
I'm all for taking orders from brussels, United we are stronger, Anyway the dream of a truly independent nation state became untenable after ww2.

This ship has sailed a long time ago. 'Europe' is basically synonymous with 'enemy' here. But at least when you are not united there is hope that you will be more occupied bickering with each other.

The far-right parties will decline fast as the mainstream parties adopt some of their policies on immigration. It's already happened up here after the Social Democrats put guards on every border and are now looking to get rid of romani beggars. They simply lack a loyal base of voters; their poll support will disappear the second more stable parties do what the public wants.

>>
>>71496621
>And I'm still not convinced it's not some kind of Belgian pyramid scheme.
EU HQ was put in Brussels because no one cares enough about Belgian to make a fuss. Putting it in Paris or Berlin or Vienna would have made people mad; this way, no one gives a fuck. Belgium's that place you drive through on the way to France.

Except none of that is actually happening. It is all empty words.

UKIP are still at the same in the polls as where they were before the referendum though, so obviously not. Only your Labour party has seen any significant post-referendum decline.

>>71496663
Exactly.

>>71496718
Nope, because Sweden was actually quite an anti-immigration country until the 1980s. It is not that amazing for it to turn back around to that. Also Sweden has not really addressed the issue, just pushed it down the road a little. Which you can see with the recent riot and attacks on Swedish police.

Left is right wing conservatives. Right is right wing classic liberals.

Grey is the number of seats in parliament. The other five lines are five different polls.

It's pretty easy for national governments to blame the EU for everything bad and then claim its achievements.

For example, the British conservatives complaining about losing control of immigration while they purposely didn't make use of a provision that would've frozen freedom of movement for a few years after the eastern expansion(as France and Germany).
>>
>>71495127
the EU is run by silly yet mysterious people
>>
Because there is nothing to like about it. UN regional committees like UNECE do all the real regulation/harmonisation work which is then handed down and rubber stamped by the EU, and that which it actually does could be done better by national governments (such as WTO representation, in which absurdly nations like Iceland have more effective representation than EU countries due to being able to represent their own interests).
>>
>>71497494

This is bullshit. Whenever something goes wrong, the EU answer is always "more Europe". Even when it comes to problems caused by having adopted EU-level solutions in the first place.

The subsidiarity principle has become a bad joke due to power creep.

A body which is supposed to administer over an area so large, diverse, and populated, at a level higher than their national government, will become severely disaffected and unattached from the common person of each region, and fail to fulfill their needs and desires. In the end, they will have no supporters, anywhere, other than the few who stand to gain from their existence as an administrative body.

It's like a more perverted version of our own federal government, just another level higher. If we had some kind of "North American" version of the EU I can guarantee it would be hated by everyone on this continent.

Now as it is in the EU's best interests to dilute and destroy individual national cultures, traditions, pride, and ethnicity, they have are also fine with letting outsiders immigrate in en masse. This makes for an easier to control and manipulate general "European" population and puts them one step closer to taking control out of national hands.

The Brexit move looked dumb, and came about thanks to the commoners, but in truth it was brilliant. It's like cutting your arm off instead of going down with the sinking ship.

People don't care to look up what's actually happening. They claim the EU keeps making undemocratic decision when in in reality the EU parliament IS elected democratically in each and every country. They say the EU is opaque and that no one knows what kinda laws they're passing or what decisions they're making when every little thing is put up on the fucking EU website for people to see.

The EU has some real issues that need to be fixed; anti-EU rhetoric being based on gross ignorance doesn't help. Shit, they're focusing on the non-issues rather than the real ones.

wut when?

There's this fantasy in the EU that Scotlands going to stab us in the back somehow and rejoin the EU and somehow it's going to work well for them.

The truth of the matter is that they're not in the position for it. They had their referendum and it was made clear by the independants that they could be taken out of the EU, but they stayed anyway. If they hate us so much they shouldn't have had their referendum before we had ours.

The polls in Scotland haven't even changed much. The independants want INDEPENDANCE, which is the opposite of the EU.

>Could it be that your industry simply couldn't compete with the west?

No, it was demanded that Spain dismantle its heavy industry and orient itself towards a service-based industry. I have a friend who is a labour lawyer who actually handled many of the cases that arose during that process.

Besides, if we can't compete under these conditions, perhaps it's simply because the conditions don't suit us? "One size fits all" solutions don't make sense when we could each be occupying our own niche. Spain isn't Germany, Germany isn't Spain and that's okay, we just need to go our separate ways.

>And I havent looked at any data, but I bet Spanish living standards were worse back then

Depends on how you defined it. Back then a working class family could easily afford two houses and a car, something which is unthinkable nowadays.

I can only tell you why I dislike it, and that's because of federalists.

Everything is gearing towards punishing the smaller States and rewarding the larger ones. What started out as a trading union has been transformed into something it never should have been - a political union.

I don't mind the free movement of people (within reason), but the EU trying to enforce "equality" legislation, or stripping national governments of their power to establish their own laws and their own sovereignty, or deliberately saying you want to "break down" the homogeneity of the Nation States. That's where you need to fuck off.

>>
>>71495673
A federal EU would mean the complete destruction of national sovereignty - for no tangible benefit.

The EU becoming a federal Union isn't going to solve demographic crises. It isn't going to solve niggers and mudskins flowing into the country. It isn't going to solve the disparity in economic models between fringe states and the heartland economies.

The EU wouldn't even function properly as a security power - we don't have a common language. Can you imagine an Estonian General issuing commands in Dutch to a Hungarian officer who leads a platoon of Frenchmen? It simply wouldn't work.
>>
>>71500647

>>
>>71500801
That's a false assumption. Not all 500 million people in the EU speak English.
>>
In the US the federal government was small, restricted, and stayed the fuck out of states affairs for about 120 years (inb4 crispy southerners, Sherman was right). What the EU needs is a serious and restricted federal union with a clearly defined mission (regulate international trade, external policy, provide for the common defense) and constitutional restrictions on governmental creep into infringing on national sovereignty. The US does a terrible job at federalism and it doesn't have to be as shitty or restrictive as the US federal government is.

>>
>>71500933
>>71500974
The federalists don't believe in restrictions. They believe in "spill-over", where the EU deserves more and more competency, and when they don't get it, they'll change the rules to suit themselves and the larger Members (re: France breaking the Maastricht Treaty, running enormous deficits - with no punishment from the EU).

I'd sooner choose war with Europe than becoming a faceless federal State.
>>
>>71501062
Fortunately, that's never going to happen. We vetoed the Lisbon Treaty's defence pact precisely because we don't want to die for some Paki in Berlin. We only passed it after we were given an opt-out of the pact (the Irish Protocols).

>>
>>71501109
If there is an EU army, it should have restrictions similar to Posse Comitatus in the US, which prevents the US military from performing military operations or policing operations in the US borders except for invasion or insurrection. All local military deployment is of the volunteer National Guard which is exclusively able to operate in the state it is formed in. This prevents using federal military assets to keep the peace against local will, all military action within US borders must be performed by locals.
>>
>>71501471
the comission is a bunch of useless, spineless cucks. about time we threw them off and directly elected the executive branch. our local politicians, however, don't want to allow that.

Ireland isn't part of NATO? you learn something every day.

i again stress, volunteer army. whoever wants to join, joins. on an individual basis.
>>
>>71501483
Privatized healthcare is able to coexist with government provided insurance. Medicare and Medicaid in the US are exactly that. The government pays private (often non-profit) hospitals for patients bills.
>>
>>71501643
I know, Germany also has both private and public health care
I just doubt that the british government would go that way, since they are very strongly supporting privatization. They even sold off British railyway to european corporations, lol
>>
>>71501553
Why should we accept an EU army in the first place? It's not like Ireland is going to be invaded by the Russians or Chinese. The greatest danger to us is the UK who aren't exactly itching to invade us after the IRA spent 3 decades turning their cities into glorified dust bins.

>>71501596
I don't see any reason to bother with an EU army in the first place. Its only purpose would be to duplicate capacities already held by the national governments.

An EU-wide army is the first step in removing domestic capabilities under the guise of "duplication".

If you want a shared command, do it bilaterally. Engage in joint procurement if you can't afford something yourselves like strategic lift aircraft.

The only people who want an EU-army are the ones who don't think national armies should have any competency and should merely be glorified policemen.

>>

>so you want no protection of our sea border?

>What, for example, if Americans elceted a clown whome you cant trust and who threatens to dismantel nato?
Well, when that happens you stop trying to fucking piggy back off them and build your own fucking army.

Do you think national parliaments can't increase defence spending by themselves? Do you think having an EU-wide army outside of NATO is somehow going to magic up the capacity to replace NATO with no increased defence spending?
>>
>>71502015
I said the Irish. That includes the lot of you. The good ones left and those who remain are the worst of the race. The rest of Europe has advanced beyond that sectarian rubbish. You're still stuck in the reformation.
>>
>>71501750
Centralized command and further standardization makes logistics significantly easier and military operations more effective and decisive. Military and other strict hierarchies benefit from union a lot more than diffuse organisations where competition drives development and efficiency. EU militaries are not going to be """competing""" any time soon, so having the logistical nightmare of a bunch of small worthless militaries is detrimental to the security of the Union. Countries also engage in protectionism and by substandard products from their own local companies for Bennie's and kickbacks.

I guess if you don't care about military effectiveness or defense and think the US will just take care of it an EU military is not worth it.
>>
>>71502139
>You're aware Italy, Greece, France and Spain all have navies, right?
Yes, but we all benefit from stopping the refugee influx, so its unfair they should shoulder all the burden. Plus, those countries, especially Greece, have some serious problems and could use our help

>Well, when that happens you stop trying to fucking piggy back off them and build your own fucking army.
I would prefere that when that happens, we already have some common army, and dont have to begin building an army from zero. Also, we could be much more effective and save a lot of money if all European defense budget would be pooled into one army instead of 28
>>
>>71502259

>>71502223
>a country full of niggers that regularly has riots and mass shootings is somehow better than a country that doesn't
Get fucked, 60% kek.

>>71502237
That's great and all, why don't we just combine European and American forces into one common military under Brussels?

Oh that's right! Because ceding control over your sovereignty to some foreign power makes no fucking sense when you share none of the concerns they do.

I don't care whether German or French industry is efficient or not, that has absolutely no bearing on why Ireland should partake or be affected by a European military.

Efficiency doesn't take into account goals. Ireland isn't going to be beating the shit out of Syrians or Somalis any time soon, so there's no fucking need for us to sell our sovereignty to some unelected cunt in Brussels whose only loyalty lies to his pockets and the pockets of his donors.
>>
>>71502487
>It was you fuckers who started it in the first place.
It was started by the civil war and disorder in Syria and Lybia. Once Greece and Italy couldnt handle the refuees anymore, Merkel put the Dublin 2 agreement out of power to help out those countries

>Why the fuck should Ireland be responsible for your fuck ups?
Because we are all members of an Union and we help each other. Like we helped Ireland during the 2008 financial crisis
>>
>>71502597
>Like we helped Ireland during the 2008 financial crisis
I was waiting for you to use that.

You didn't "help" us. We saved you, and you fucking shafted us.

Not only did the EU borrow money from the market and LOAN it to us, they also charged us MORE than what they took it from the market from - that's not solidarity, that's predatory loaning designed to extract a profit from the Irish people.

What's even funnier, is that the only reason we needed to take out the fucking loan in the first place was to protect German, French, British, and Belgian banks.

We essentially bailed you out, then took a loan from you, to pay you back the money you lost PLUS FUCKING INTEREST.

All of this after deliberately keeping interest rates low in the mid 2000s to help Germany instead of Ireland (we needed 8% interest rates but the ECB would only set them at 2% because Germany wanted them low).

Don't pretend like you fucking helped us. You helped yourselves.
>>
>>71502487
Apparently the NATO Supreme Commander in Mons, Belgium is American and the Supreme Commander in Norfolk, VA, USA is French. Not even mad.

The US already ceded military control for NATO operations, as have other members. They do this because our militaries are more powerful and intimidating combined rather than separate.
>>
>>71502895
We're not talking about merely integrated structures or shared command. What the EU wants is total control over foreign policy, to relegate the national Governments to merely provinces and the European army being answerable to the Commission rather than the Member States.
>>
>>71502800
>You didn't "help" us. We saved you, and you fucking shafted us.
You "saved" us by paying back the money that you own? Do you think you would have been better off if you defaulted and left the EU, like Greece planned to do?

>Not only did the EU borrow money from the market and LOAN it to us, they also charged us MORE than what they took it from the market from
I would like a source on that. Also, why didnt you borrow money yourself then? Because nobody wanted to lend money to a country that couldnt pay its debts maybe?
>>
>>71503039
That's an understandable concern and a major concession of control and sovereignty. It seems difficult if not impossible to separate economy from foreign policy and foreign policy from military and internal politics from all of those. Having a military union and economic union largely but not entirely covering the same territory and a independent foreign policy for all the involved states seems like a kludge and an unsustainable practice. Glhf tho
>>
>>71503143
>You "saved" us by paying back the money that you own?
No, we saved you by the Government taking on private banking debt it had absolutely no right in taking on. Not only this, but the EU refused to let us burn senior bonds. We had to stomach the entire cost, and German banks lost not a penny.

>Because nobody wanted to lend money to a country that couldnt pay its debts maybe?
Yes and the reason people thought we couldn't pay? BECAUSE WE JUST QUADRUPLED OUR FUCKING NATIONAL DEBT TO SAVE YOU CUNTS.

You fucking little jumped up moral-high horse condescending nigger. Fucking pretend like you helped us, all you did was fuck us in the ass and pretend that you didn't.
