We Dutch people always like to boast about our civil engineering achievements. Like the French on the worlds political stage, the Dutch consider themselves much better than they actually are. Our greatest pride are our delta works but they aren't even that good. We stole ideas from other countries then executed them poorly with insane cost overruns and shit construction quality. You can argue about who takes the blame but one thing is clear; most of our significant civil engineering projects have gone to shit one way or another. Yet we keep telling ourselves that we the Dutch achieve great things and that there is great worldwide demand for our supposedly unique and quality knowledge.

Ah, the Gouwe aquaduct. The construction itself is done alright but other equipment is fucked up. The tunnel is leaking (not the problem because it doesnt leak too much) but e.g. the pumps have no security system. When they fail the only way this feedback gets back to the controlroom is when cars start to crash because there is too much water on the road.

canals are great. underrated infrastructure, because it's mostly used for shipping goods, and not for people.

US really needs to take better advantage of its natural waterways and expand them with canals.
