Football is a 3 team competition and one of those teams are perennial bottlers.
Hurling is a 2 team competition.

Both are officiated poorly with referees who are afraid to send off local community amateurs and disciplinary panels who are afraid to suspend them. The organisation is inherently unfair as well with one team (Dublin) always playing at home in Football for revenue reasons.

They're still fun if you happen to catch the 2 or 3 big games each year.

Rugby is the best in terms of enjoyable games, logical rulesets and competent organising bodies. The fact that it's played to a high level professionally here is impressive as well.

American football is fine for what it is but it doesn't have the sort of constant flow us Europeans are used to. It's more like a phase game like baseball involving strategy and execution of a planned move rather than thinking on your feet or requiring athletic prowess.

I don't know where to begin with the problems with soccer. The ruleset is inherently flawed and FIFA are afraid to change it.

Modern history books have a tendency to shoot for either the lowest common denominator or be "academic" as fuck, and the academic ones throw in everything the author knows or has studied. Good if you're an academic trying to use the book for references, but if you're trying to learn the broad picture, it can be difficult when they digress for a hundred pages on minor, self-contained aspects of history.

Buying an archaeology book was kind of asking for the hard stuff on pots and stuff though.

Glad my "effortposts" (I don't strain myself too much desu) have hit home with somebody.
It's a neglected area of theory, but truth be told it isn't very complicated, just distressing to a certain type of attitude. I have a book I'm reading at the minute (slowly and intermittently as ever) about historiography, and while I've only gotten through the first chapter, and don't know if I'll agree with his conclusions, he's definitely raised some interesting questions and put some real zingers out there against the most prevalent attitudes out there.

I'm also interested in what documentaries specifically you think are affected by this phenomenon? I haven't watched TV for years, and desu I've only noticed the trend in books. If anything, documentaries, at least of the old-style History Channel type, tended towards an overly narrative-driven presentation style than anything else, though that was probably because it was that specific "military history" style of history.
