Why is Mexico City so fucking big?

Its been growing for the last 692 years it had to get big at some point
>>

1 = mexican = 2 muricans = 4 normal people, so they need a lot of space

It is fog and smog. But in november/december the smog goes away due to the wind.
>>
>>71350283

Cities surrounded by mountains dont let the smog escape. the same happens in Santiago.
>>
>>71349171
It only looks so big to you because Americans are so small. From the position of an European that's small.
>>

Why Mexico City is so big and have only few buildings?

because is big and we have enough space for sprawl.
Also Mexico city is a bunch of several districts and each district has its own downtown per se. Skyscrapers are located in several small points like pic related which is Santa Fe, also Polanco, Insurgentes and Reforma.
The rest of the city is housing, 5-8 storey apartments and parks.

It's a shame, I find Mexico really beautiful.
>>
>>71351830

Sao Paulo is the most important city in the world no one wants to visit. You literally only go there for work.
It is an ocean of apartment buildings from the 70s.
>>
>>71353109
This will change with the new mayor. Dória will make São Paulo great again!
>>
>>71352983
You can live in South West USA. New Mexico and Arizona look like Mexico and have a similar culture but are safer
>>

Being from a country with 3 million people, I can't wrap my mind around that it's equal only to a neighbourhood of a megapolis like Mexico City. Seriously, how do people live in cities like this?

We're not that crowded even if it feels like it, the main problem here is that the city wasn't design to become what it is today. We have daily issues with public transport and let's add a poor driving culture. Also the government keeps adding new ways of public transport that just makes it worst to drivers (like new vial distributors that causes bottle necks and you have to pay for driving in).

We're just not that organized (like Japan is with much less space).

- It is the city with the most museums in the world.
- Historic centre of New Spain
- Tenochtitlan ruins beside the Cathedral
- Xochimilco, (the remains of the canals the aztecs used)
- Coyoacán (a small colonial town that was swallowed by the city).
- Hipster boroughs and neighborhoods with tons of parks, restaurants and bars (Colonia Roma, Condesa, Del Valle).
- Rich boroughs and neighborhoods with big shopping malls and some skyscrapers with gourmet restaurants (Santa Fe, Polanco)
- Teotihuacan ruins are really close, though they belong to the State of Mexico, (a state surrounding Mexico City).
- Popocatepetl and Iztacihuatl volcanoes are also really close, though they are also in other states.
- There are some forests inside the city (Chapultepec, it has a "castle", la Marqueza, el Ajusco, el desierto de los leones, etc)
- La Villa, where the Virgin of Guadalupe supposedly appeared and left a coat with her image behind (second most visited church in the world, behind the Vatican).
- Lucha libre arenas.
- Bullfighting rings
- The Aztec stadium, where Maradona and Pelé won the world cup, it is also the place where the "hand of god" goal, and the best goal in the world were made, and the "Game of the century" was also played there.
- The zoo is quite nice and big
- "Tianguis" and "mercados" are places where people buy mainly food and some other things, and there are some notewhorthy ones like "Mercado de Jamaica", "Mercado de Sonora"

I don't know, there are a lot of things to do in here. And english is not widely spoken but you can find people who do speak it with no problems,

You can start from the airport to the city historical center, take a little tour of colonial mexico, to the pre hispanic empire, you can enjoy all the museums around the main square and in the national palace, later you can move on to Porfirio Diaz mexico, the Central Alameda (a park) the palace of the arts, post office palace and so, walk trough the streets, you will find MORE museums and food, walk all the way or take a turibus (tourist trap official tour bus) all the way to the monument to the revolution and the republic plaza, follow Reforma beautiful street, modern mexico with skyscrapers and shit, it leads to a forest, chapultepec, there you will find a castle with the national history museum, you will know imperial mexico and the site of one of the last battles of the mexican american war, the monument to our fallen heroes and more.
You still have a lot to cover my friend, this city has a lot to offer

Is Mexico city nice? Is it safe?

What's there do to? What's there to see? Is there an active nightlife? Will you hangout w/ me if I come this May?

Is there an other city you'd recommend to visit instead?

I went to Cancun when I was 19, it was pretty and all but I didn't take in any culture as I was drunk for a week straight, it didn't 'feel' like Mexico but a city for American co-eds.

If your only intentions are to get drunk, party, sex and shit and not to meet the culture of my city and all of its past I suggest you stick to american tourist trap cities, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and similar cities
Otherwise, take time in Mexico City, Guanajuato, Pueba, Guadalajara and the magic towns across the country

Those were my intentions when I was 19. As my post inferred I don't want that as I missed out on the sights and sounds of your country and her people.

I will look into all those places as I'm seriously considering this year, ty
