The main purpose is to prevent another war between european countries. A good way to do this is to make the european economies so dependent on eachother's economies than war would be just economically impossible.

EU was always an economic project. The stuff about preventing european wars or acting as a balancing power against Russia is a load of bull, as is the humanist nonsense like spreading democracy or human rights. EU was created by heavy industry, for their own needs, and EU's main function is to turn itself into a more efficient, uniform economic zone where the free market gains power at the expense of democratic governments.
