It's a less shitty Russia. Roughly 1/3 Russian and 2/3 Kazakh, with a bunch of other minorities (Uzbeks, Uyghurs, Germans, Chinese, etc.)

Most Kazakhs are Muslim but don't take it very seriously (they drink like Russians, for example). Kazakhs speak Kazakh, which is close-ish to Turkish, and most can also speak Russia. Russians are usually monolingual.
