I'm against the death penalty for the same reason I'm against genetically modifying humans.

Both the death penalty and genetic modifications are great ideas... except they'd get used wrong, because of, greed, corruption or even because of honest mistakes. And some things just shouldn't be left to chance.

The biggest cause of death in prisons is suicide. Especially for those who are serving a life sentence. That's because the death penalty and rehabilitation are not mutually exclusive. The danger is falling in the trap of the Marxist idea of the mallable man (which in increasingly left wing Europe is popular), this idea that if we just invest more in education we can eventually close all prisons. This is objectively wrong. Some people will always, either due to their own nature or due to some circumstance, become a danger to themselves and to others no matter how much money we throw at the education system. Some of these people are simply too dangerous to ever let loose in society again, and keeping them cooped up for life would be needlessly cruel as well as needlessly expensive with zero benefits for either party involved (the state, the taxpayer and the prisoner).

Someone like Breivik for example, he killed 70+ innocent children for the sole purpose of drawing attention to his manifesto. How do you even "fix" a guy like that? You cannot. The only reason not to kill him would be the fear of turning him into a martyr. For all intents and purposes, he should be dead.
