If they risked their cojones to protect Europe, I'd think of them differently. But they wouldn't care if Spain and Portugal burnt the next day, which seems to me that at their heart they don't care for the European cultural influences that permeate their society.

Yes, but keep in mind we use the old definition of western which is mostly cultural.

There is no other continent that is culturally closer to Latin America than Europe, Africa and Asia feel very foreign. This is very simple to explain since everything from religion, language, instiutions, etc. was imported from Europe, indian culture was basically replaced.

This doesn't mean that there aren't places that have more native influence than others (like Bolivia) or that Latin America should not be classified as its own subset of western culture of civilization as it has some traits that are different from "main" western culture. IMO It would be a mistake to classify it as its own civilization because there's very little original things that weren't brought from Europe besides some specific places where native culture is very strong and could be its own thing.

Having said that, after the Cold War "western" started being a more political and economic term and in that way Latin America isn't western as it is poorer and more islationist/restistant to the US than the rest of NATO that is the core of the modern definition of "western".

During WWII the US asked for us to be provide allied forces and we did, because of that "good relations", when the US saw Socialist uprising in Brazil they ordered the brazilian military to do a coup, and we did, we killed all socialists, burned every single piece of art, media and propaganda that could be seem as socialist (and in the process lost a great number of cultural art that wasn't socialist, but every regime does this shit) and were basically America's little hoe for a long time.
