Because taking your shoes off suggests that you're getting setlted into someone's house and seems presumptuous. Keeping your shoes on maintains the sense that your visit is only temporary and that you'll be gone soon.

It doesn't matter if you have a hardwood or tile floor anyway which most do, only carpetfags give a shit

Isn't your floor filthy as fuck though? I don't want to be walking around and have dirt all over the floor, doesn't that also damage the floor? To be clear usually the people living there do take off their shoes. Its only house guests who tend to keep them on. I always walk around in slippers. My mom is constantly complaining to take off my shoes so not to track dirt.
