The Four Beauties or Four Great Beauties are four ancient Chinese women, renowned for their beauty. The scarcity of historical records concerning them meant that much of what is known of them today has been greatly embellished by legend. They gained their reputation from the influence they exercised over kings and emperors and, consequently, the way their actions impacted Chinese history. Three of the Four Beauties brought kingdoms to their knees and their lives ended in tragedy.

They also think beards are ugly and barbaric.

I don't believe it to be honest. If you go to a 2nd tier city or better you'll be safe. HK has its share (actually, maybe more than its share) of desperate people slumming it. It's not a safe place.

I think it's an interesting place and probably matches "western" conception of a chinese city most accurately. but my experience with hk diasporia is that they tend to self-segregate and have ideas about the mainland that don't match my experience with it.

Hong Kong is possibly the single worst place you could go in China to learn Mandarin (aside from maybe Tibet or Xinjiang). Most HK people speak good English and generally dislike having to speak any Mandarin. Beijing is the best option and you will have a mostly standard (albeit erhua-influenced) accent by the time you leave. Shanghai is good too but you'll hear a lot of Shanghainese on the streets.
>>

>>
>>71100056
Get a GF that doesn't speak English, move to a TIER 88 shithole, enjoy speaking Chinese within a year.
>>
>>71100094
this is obviously the best method but its not realistic for me at this time. im just really shit at self-directed learning, so many resources but no inclination to consolidate and organize them into a coherent form of study.
>>
>>71095578
i thought chinese enjoyed westerners attempts at learning their language? they were probably honoured if anything
>>
>>71100056
Start taking classes. You need a pattern and some discipline to learn properly.
>>
>>71100171
It's really hard. I have been in China for 2 years now and unless you have a GF or don't go to school every week, you will not be motivated.
If you know the basics and go out with foreigners a lot, you don't need that much knowledge to communicate or know your way everywhere in China.
However, if it's for business purposes, then you need to study everyday. Private teacher (GF or get a 80kuai girl) is the only way to go and learn hard.
Took me a solid 1.5 year with intense study to know a good amount, but i can't write for shit.
I am sure if i didn't party in Beijing and went to a shithole, my Chinese would be excellent.

"That was one of the few mixed couples that Monteleone encountered in which a Chinese woman was paired with a Russian man. “The combination is usually Chinese men and Russian women,” he said. On the southern side of the border, he noticed that language schools are full of young Russian women who seem dedicated to acquiring Mandarin, and perhaps a Chinese husband."

"One feature of the Russian-Chinese relationship seemed especially telling: Cross-border marriages are overwhelmingly between Chinese men and Russian women. Much of this has to do with demographics—Russia has a surplus of women, while China has too many men. But as one Russian woman told me, "Chinese men are kinder and more attentive to their wives.""

personally I mix Mandarin and English in casual situations, I never learned Hokkien (it's not taught formally in schools here) and only know a few basic words because my parents speak it a lot to each other. Is the Taiwanese version taught formally over there?
>>
>>71143572
I am not sure, there's probably no need to since people speak it at home in regions where it's prevalent anyway. I know it's common for them to read classical Chinese in Taiyu or even Hakka language (which is more common in Taoyuan, where I used to live) because it's closer to the ancient pronunciation.
>>
>>71143618
>because it's closer to the ancient pronunciation
Is there a reason why Mandarin has simplified so much of its pronunciation (loss of tone, loss of consonant endings) compared to all the other dialects out there? I recall some random shitposter blamed it on manchus not being able to speak properly but I don't know how much to believe that. IIRC even recently there was a pronunciation shift of K -> J which is why Canada became Jianada.
>>
>>71144047
And why Peking became Beijing for that matter.
There is probably some core of truth to the Manchu thing, but it got exaggerated, we're on /int/ after all. Can some linguist please weigh in?
>>
>>71144129
>"Peking" is a spelling created by French missionaries of the 17th and 18th centuries. In De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas (1615), Matteo Ricci calls the city Pechinum.[2] (The English translation gives Pequin.[3]) "Peking" appears in A Description of the Empire of China (1735) by Jean-Baptiste Du Halde.[4][5] These early spellings may represent pronunciation in the Nanjing dialect, which was used as a lingua franca at this time,[6][7] or the various other southern Chinese languages (e.g., Cantonese, Hokkien and Hakka) used by the traders of the port cities visited by early European traders. Peking was the English name of the city until the adoption of pinyin.

The hardest part is the tone sandhi thing. After years of learning Chinese and mastering the pronunciation, it still doesn't come naturally. The neutral tone is hard too, I still don't get when I'm supposed to use it and it doesn't come naturally either.

>>71145577
My dialect has something resembling the Cantonese six tones (very expressive and emphatic), so they don't present a problem, pronunciation or listening to identify them. But I'm not actively learning any Sino-Tibetan language, just listened to the tones once out of curiosity
Also, we have pitch. A Japanese tourist told me my pronunciation is great, but I wouldn't know anything since I'm neither learning Japanese

>>71149162

Meanwhile I see people on imageboards and normie social media get assblasted whenever they see fantizi, especially Singaporean and Indonesian Chinese. We've had some of such people on /sino/ before.
>>
>>71149294
I don't really know what I'm talking about here so don't quote me but can these overseas Chinese understand traditional? The few mainlanders I spoke to in traditional were pretty chill and never gave me shit about it, and they actually seemed to fully understand what I was saying. Meanwhile, my parents who use traditional are like "wtf why is this character like that" when they see simplified. So just a guess?

>>71150107
>but can these overseas Chinese understand traditional?
Here in Malaysia (and I believe also in Singapore) parents' generation all grew up learning traditional characters, so they can understand it and you'll you'll still see them around not infrequently, but the younger generation were all taught using simplified characters and use those mostly (though they may pick up some more common traditional characters like any Mainlander can). I've seen subtitles on TV in traditional as well.

Also if you buy light novels in Chinese from Popular or Kinokuniya or something they'll be written in traditional since the publisher had the HK and Taiwan market in mind.

to supplement this, my parents have said a number of times of a number of characters that the traditional construction is more logical because the concepts of the radicals that make up the word relate to the meaning of the word itself, meanwhile the simplified version just looks similar but the radicals have no relation to the meaning at all.

The 1000 most common of the most come 3000 words or something like that are simplified, and then the number of simplified characters radiates out from there. In proportion to the total number of characters s Chinese will know the number of simplified is small, and there are some groups of simplified that aren't really simplified at all, such as anything with the speech radical.

Anyway they encounter traditional characters pretty frequently (KTV is probably the most common place they see them) and they can recognize the common traditional characters pretty well even though they probably can't write them.

Why do Taiwanese qts hate Korea so much? Is it to please Nippon-dono?
>>
>>71155321
imho there's pretty much no reason to use zhuyin; pinyin is faster on pretty much every level and i wish i learned it before so i wouldn't get ??? at things like nv for 女

>>71155383
people mistake it for japanese sometimes, i guess if you squint it looks like katekana?

>>71155487
i'm not sure what else there is to say uhhh the only difference in sound between ㄓㄔㄕㄖ and ㄗㄘㄙ are the curled vs uncurled tongue but the taiwan accent is lazy and sometimes you don't curl your tongue so hahahah good luck if chinese is your second language

>>71155576

>>71155840
Yeah I remember back when I was studying and tried to type on my computer. I couldn't understand why 女 didn't appear in the list when I wrote "nu". The next day I asked my classmate and he said it's "nv". You get used to it pretty fast though. I wouldn't want to go back to zhuyin now.
>>
>>71156052
the thing i like about typing in zhuyin is how your keyboard fills in for you, like if i type ㄎㄅㄎㄧ on my phone it gives me 可不可以. can you do that with the pinyin keyboard?
>>
>>71156313
Pinyin has word prediction too
>>
>>71156313
Don't think so. At least I don't know of any such thing. It kinda works like that on my phone though. Like, let's say I type "zy", it changes to 這樣. Would've been nice if I could do the same thing on my pc.

我想问,人真的会说这句话吗?我听过人说“我操你妈”,“我操你妈了隔壁”等等,但是我从来没听过人说这句话。

Because mainlanders can actually read them?

It's just kind of outdated in use, like seeing Gothic script in Europe, but you still see it as decorative writing for advertisements and on buildings for example.

Would you get offended by seeing Gothic writing?
>>
>>71126774
It's a meme 哥们儿
>>
>>71157594
Not really. And why wouldn't they be able to read them? As Malay Anon pointed out, Southeast Asians see them regularly.

I also feel like there might also be some ethnic insecurity along the lines of 'please accept me Mainlanders, I am just like you' in there. But the choice of subject matter is rather odd as the Mainlanders themselves don't care much.

Wouldn't surprise me if people from /r/China and /r/CCJ2 people post here. Chan culture tends to bleed over to there, and they're responsible for a good number of memes among China expats

The Chou Tzu-yu probably has done a lot to ruin Taiwanese opinion's of Korea.

And with the deterioration of Sino-Korean relations after South Korea announced it would accept THADD, it seems like all of East Asia hates South Korea now

I've never met a Chinese language learner who got angry when they saw traditional characters. I find it bothersome when I have to read them, and I roll my eyes when people claim that traditional is more "beautiful" and that simplification made learning characters harder, but that's the extent of my attitude.

Since Hui don't have a separatist movement, they're generally trusted by the government and are able to practice Islam with a lot less restrictions compared to Uighurs. However, more and more Han Chinese feel that the government coddles Hui too much and gives them too many subsidies.

On the topic of zhuyin...
This one Taiwanese I know is pissing me off so much.
Like whenever there is Pinyin she acts as if it was this complete alien language to her and it's just IMPOSSIBLE for a Taiwanese to know how to pronounce or read or write it because they use bopomofo and Pinyin is so mainland.
Makes me want to beat the shit out of her every time.
At least she knows 台北 is Taipei.

Also triggers the fuck out of her when I say she lives in Taipei, because Banqiao is NEW TAIPEI CITY.

>>
>>71158756

>>
>>71158756
Lots of placenames in Taiwan have switched to pinyin. They need to make up their minds though, it's annoying seeing both Wade-Giles and pinyin. "Kaohsiung" and "Hsinchu" are just abominations.

At least they're easier to understand for people who don't know mandarin. I'd rather read Kaohsiung than hear someone say khaoksiong.

Also it's just the way those cities are known in English. The pointless Peking-Beijing discussion plenty of sucu drama already.

>Implying Wade-Giles is the same as Hanyu Pinyin and isn't one of the worst romanization systems ever created

Whenever I see Taiwanese names in Wade-Giles, I have to look up their name in hanzi just to know how to pronounce it properly.
>>
>>71159156
Pinyin is useful when you speak Chinese. Wade-Giles, complicated as it is, isn't as misleading to people who don't know the language.
>>
>>71158861
yeah you go from one city to another and you have zhongshan road, then it's jhong shan in the next and chung shan somewhere else.
that whole hsi thing int WG is really dumb anyway, would have never guessed how to pronounce kaohsiung from the way it's written
kao H syung
HHsinchu
at least gaoxiong would be a butchered version of it's actual pronunciation when you just read it like that

also kek at tongyong, who gives a flying fuck about this shit
