Japan was nothing scary militarily. Their geography made it easy to starve them into surrender, and their military equipment was low-tech and did not improve a single iota from the beginning to end of the war. The Soviet invasion of Manchuria in August 1945 utterly cut the IJA into ribbons.

Japanese air and naval forces were consistently top-notch. Their army was pretty much on par with everyone else's until mid 1942 or so (standards advanced rapidly from 1939), but even at that point they could still put up very stiff resistance in the right circumstances and still had several good pieces of gear. The Allies had a particularly good opinion of their light artillery..

Are tankies serious with this shit? The Red Army didn't cut anything to ribbons, the Kwantung Army was still very much intact and fighting by the time the Emperor announced the empire's surrender. The forces they had deployed in Manchuria were also literally the worst in the entire empire, with an average readiness rating of 30% (most of their army, including all of their modern gear, having been deployed to the Home Islands to meet the Americans). Despite that this ragtag shit force still checked the Soviet advance in several places and achieved a 2-1 casualty ratio, far off from what you'd expect at such a huge disadvantage in both numbers and quality.

It's the opposite. Most German generals planned on WW2 being WW1 2.0, with 500,000 casualties in the offensive of 1940 followed by a build-up for a second massive offensive in 1942. Hitler was the one who overrode them all and listened to some low-ranking upstart by the name of Manstein.

For the 1938-1939 Border War the seminal work is Alvin Coox's "Japan Against Russia". Very long and very detailed. And yes, the Soviets did roll them over with tanks in the desert- though they took incredibly large armor losses, an exchange rate they couldn't really afford in a hypothetical full war given the relative weakness of Soviet forces in the Far East. Japan actually did have a sizable armored force after all, and the Soviets had to project power over that huge empty area known as Siberia.

Would indicate the Eastern Front was responsible for roughly 60% of their casualties (almost all naval and air losses were taken in the west/south). The USN soloed the IJN, and that's all that really mattered. The end of the war demonstrated this quite well. The Japanese put their full focus on fighting the US in a massive land war, and gathered 4.3 million troops, 5,300 tanks, 12,000+ pieces of artillery, and 13,600 aircraft on their Home Islands for that task. Had this army been allowed to fight, it would've been the largest one deployed by any single Axis country in the war- 50% larger than what the Germans used to invade the USSR. Had they contributed this to Manchuria or Burma or China, it's highly doubtful the Allies would've made half as much progress in those areas.

But the Americans promptly said "fuck that", sank the IJN, sank the merchant marine, and flung bombs at the islands while starving it out. Effectively laying siege to the entire IJA. It worked. The grand Japanese army surrendered and was disarmed without getting to fire a shot at the Americans.

The USSR sent many, many, MANY soldiers to die against the Germans and finally make them fall but they were busy in so many fronts at the same time and the manpower's difference was indeed too big. Same happened in Indochina, Korean and Vietnamese war when the Chinese sent thousands of soldiers whose the solely purpose was to die again and again until their opponents ran out of men, ammo and money.
