what does japan think about western interest in anime?

I know a few Japanese exchange students. Most find it neat and are happy westerners like Japanese things, but maybe don't really understand why it's so popular. A few others just don't care, and some wish foreigners into anime be interested in actual Japanese culture, not just animation.

Don't know it's representative of Japanese people in general, though. I would imagine that older people who didn't grow up with anime see it differently, for example.

Yeah, kinda. Though I've never seen weebs that deluded. Those that wished weebs were interested in actual Japanese culture were less cynical about it once I explained that anime is often a gateway to interest in general Japanese culture.
