If he only watching cartoons it's not even a real achievement. I'm able to understand most anime without subs just fine but whenever I try watching movies (last one was 血と砂) it becomes insanely hard and I just swtch subs on again.

I wish this was the case for me. I can't even watch anime for fun now because my brain thinks I'm studying it and I will just try and pick out the words I can recognise (which is very few). A few months ago it didn't matter because everything was just "AuoiOeAhgoiigokatebuiee".
