My landlord is addicted to gambling or the stock market, or something. Like a day after I moved in to this place his wife knocked on my door at 11pm and taped her business card to my door. She said that I should pay her instead and explained everything. Since I moved in here there have been three public notices taped to the building door; I guess the property is getting repossessed or something because it was remortgaged. This is the last thing that they have besides their house cause the old guy supposedly lost everything else. I gave the money for this month's rent to her and he ended up going a little bit nuts over it. She is nuts too though cause she talks about having to take care of his mother non stop.

First time was when a girl from Beijing on the train from the airport to downtown Tokyo wasn't able to unlock the train's cord attached to her luggage (on the train there are lockable cords you can attach to your luggage to prevent theft of it). She didn't speak Japanese or English so I acted as an interpreter between her and one of the train staff members to explain the situation.

Second time was when I was at a bar. A group of Taiwanese students in front of me was speaking Chinese, one of them turns around and starts socializing with me in English, I respond in Chinese. We end up having a good time and I went to their dorm a few days later to have Malaysian hot pot with them.

Most recently was went I went to a Chinese bookstore and bought a book there.

I used to be really nervous about speaking Chinese but after living in China I gained a lot more confidence. I still have a lot to learn, but nowadays whenever I'm in China I don't have any fears about communication when I go into restaurants or stores, and I've been able to become friends with many people who speak Chinese only and no English. Just start speaking with Chinese people and see how things go.

Use 成语 or 文言文 phrases to impress people as well. When I use phrases even as basic as 入乡随俗, 说来话长, 三人行必有我师焉 etc. people get really excited.

>>
>>71030470
Maybe they expect the average Dutch guest to be unable to handle it. They can't get away with serving the parody in places that are frequented by their own kind, and apparently it's hard to imagine that some non-Chinese don't want the parody either.
I guess it is at least clear that I know what I am ordering when I do so in Chinese.

Chopsticks are used to pick up food without poking through it: e.g. juicy pan-fried dumplings - using a spoon would be clumpsy, using fork AND knife requires both hands instead of just one.

I don't buy the chopstick = superior meme though, I use fork and knife for steak after all.

To be a bit more intellectually charitable, most people in the Sinology department feel a lot of affection towards China, and this leads them to applaud everything about the country and dismiss any criticism. Some are straight up oikophobes. Their booism sometimes gets in the way of fair judgement.

Also what's the deal with written/audio component. HSK website seems to imply that each test has both written and audio bits, but my university has "HSK written exams" and Audio exams. Confusing
>>
>>71045699
I think there's some weird oral test or something that is kind of a separate thing, but the main test has a writing and listening and reading section.

And yeah, it's only 600 words (so 20 a day) and early grammar is piss easy. You'd have to go a bit intensely though to not struggle with listening.

Fair enough. I think I'll do HSK 2 this march, and then HSK 3 later in the year. Want to do my PhD in Hong Kong or Singapore next year and, even though their universities are pretty much English speaking, I hope having some HSK under my belt will give me an advantage for admission.

I have MS Word 2013, Windows 8.1, and I have a laptop keyboard...how do I turn on Chinese typing and use it properly? As early as the 90s, on a different computer, I have accidentally turned on Chinese typing but didn't know how to use it.

Thank you. What if I only want it to happen in MS Word? I don't want to accidentally switch the whole computer to Chinese especially when I can't type in it yet.
>>
>>71050349
I don't know if there is a way to only make it work in MS word-- but you don't need to worry. What you are doing is enabling another keyboard option (also known as an input method), not changing your system language. You will just get a pop-up box added to your toolbar that lets you change keyboards at will.

鳯爪, phoenix claws - aka chicken feet.

I used to love eating these along with sweet and sour pork, then I stopped - it started to taste weird - I have a feeling that less than fresh ingredients were being used to make sweet and sour pork, and ditto for chicken feet - they were cast-offs that weren't treated properly.

I think much like how you can judge a vietnamese restaurant by their fermented fish sauce, you can judge a HK/Cantonese restaurant by their sweet and sour pork - if they they didn't skim here they wouldn't have elsewhere.

My mother told me this expression about Cantonese eating habits: The only thing with four legs that we don't eat is a table!

When we got to Canada, I was shocked to see a skinned rabbit hanging on a hook in a rural grocery store - in Hong Kong they were pets.

My parents thinks ox tail soup is weird.

My mother refuse to try the bbq meal worms I brought at Tutti Frutti, but she drinks this Chinese soup with a water eetle in it.

My parents say blue cheese is weird, but we have this jar of fermented tofu we use as seasoning for congee.

Try Taiwan.

Hong Kong is safer than China, that's why they told you, it's not just city official thugs, it's also the food - Chinese who live there are used to it, but you might get sick.

HK people speak Cantonese and Engrlish, it's an interesting place to go, but if you want to learn Mandarin and not get poisoned, go to Taiwan.

Or even Singapore.
