The thing is that Latvian is a linguistic dinosaur of a language. Baltic languages haven't changed a lot and they have retained a lot archaic features which make them very difficult to learn but you should have no problem finding language partners to practice because you are a South African with British origins and virtually no one is learning Latvian. They might be really enthusiastic about helping you.
