There is no way our average height is 5'8". Most other sources put it at 5'9"-5'11" but even then from personal experience I think this is too short. I'm 5'10" and at least 2/3 of the males at my university are taller than me.

I like to think of europeans as the most genetically blessed race of all. In mena the best looking people are those who resemble europeans the most. I am happy that I am tall even though I am not european. Northern Europeans seem to have more genetic links to the tall nomadic eurasian steppe people from 4500 years ago.
As for the southern europeans, I think its obvious why. They became shorter thanks to the physically inferior but smart neolitic/chalcolithic populations Iberian peninsula.

you made some good points. there's correlation with steppe ancestry since they had the highest predicted genetical potential of the major three that contributed to Europeans. there was also selection for *decreased* height in Neolithic Iberia compared to its Anatolian origins (but selection for increased height in Central Europe) but also positive selection for increased height in Iberia since then

so there are other factors at play too. unfortunately only Iberia has been studied on this count, not the rest of Southern Europe (Italy or the Balkans) and the Balkans is a pretty tall region despite having less steppe ancestry than other 'unimpressive' parts of Northern Europe, height-wise (UK, Poland etc.)
