At the time, when much of Europe was agricultural and pastoral, it indeed was very valuable. In comparison most other countries have developed high-tech industries and high end service industries such as banking, or at least offer valuable raw resources.
Ireland meanwhile still offers potatoes, tax havens too for a while until the EU asserts its control over its new colony.
