No Cambodian thread on the front page? What is this.

Does Anon speak Khmer or have any contact with Cambodia?

My drunken resolution for tonight is to learn Khmer. Rationale:

>South East Asia -> cheap everything, warm climate, relaxed lifestyle
>It's a convenient getaway from wageslavery, unlike Japan or Korea, where an average loser can at best afford a 2 week holiday

>Not tonal. White man can't into tonal language. Intonation conveys semantic context in Khmer, like in western languages
>Thai-Vietnamese-Khmer sprachbund -> the vocabulary is helpful in surrounding countries
>Analytic, no need to fuck around with inflections
>16M speakers, but still gets you 9000 hipster points

>Written language since 600 CE
>Muh Angkor, we wuz emperors, Khmers helped preserve moden Thai culture

I've never been to Cambodia, but I was in Thailand and Laos for quite a while and have some kind of Stockholm Syndrome towards the whole SEA region. Before I'm going there I want to have at least some basics of Khmer covered.

In all seriousness though what are some of the difficulties of Khmer? I mean sure, it's not tonal and it's analytical, but surely there must be other headache-inducing aspects? For example, how difficult is the script? And what about pronounciation, there must be some difficult sounds to master?

Have you gathered any ressources? All in all I must say that your rationale actually does seem pretty solid, even though myself I'm too much of an autistic betamax waitu piggu skinny sperg to ever adventure myself into SEA.

I haven't really, just started reading.

The script looks cool but it's messed up as fuck. Just like Thai, you have vowels that come before, above, below or after the consonant they're connected with, so you read left-right but also jump in every other direction within a syllable. There are no spaces.

The phonology has some nasal stuff at least, but from a quick glance it didn't look too bad. Tones are the #1 boogieman for me anyway.

>During the Khmer Rouge era, all religions, including both Buddhism and Islam were persecuted.
>According to Cham sources, 132 mosques were destroyed during the Khmer Rouge era, many others were desecrated, and Muslims were not allowed to worship.
>Muslims were forced to eat pork and were murdered when they refused.
>Whole Cham villages were exterminated. >Chams were not permitted to speak their language.
>Cham children were taken away from their parents and raised as Khmers.

Is it as bad as Thai though? I mean Thai has 44 consonent letters for only 21 consonent sounds, and a ton of other weird shit.

In other words, is it as bad as Thai, or somewhat easier?

Dunno, I knew Thai script is based on Khmer so I was basically expecting the same level of lunacy, just without tones. Apparently there are "only" 35 consonants so must be easier.

Thai script has a shitton of exceptions, like the same vowel symbols mean completely different wovels / tones depending on what consonant they come with, etc. Hopefully Khmer has less of that.

Compared with something like Japanese though where you have to learn both kana scripts and 2000+ Kanji, it doesn't seem like an impossible task. Or Chinese proper, for that matter.

Cambodia is really dirty and the people are rude, scheming, and ugly. I don't think you're thinking this through.

Fried cockroaches taste like shit if they're not seasoned at all. The innards are full of this sticky molten-cheddar-like substance with a foul aftertaste. Pretty sure you can make them tasty as well.

Does anybody know how wypipo are viewed there nowadays? Also how much of a Chinese colony are they, economically speaking?

According to numbers such as GDP per capita, HDI, etc. it's extremely poor, but it still looks like a decent-enough place, or at least Phnom Penh does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4pVy9bk_jg

Of course, outside of Phnom Penh it's probably MUCH less developed, especially in rural areas. Also the country has a homicide rate of 6.5, which is kinda bad but still not horrible.

Yeah, I've done the farang in Thai thing. I'm guessing Cambodia is a degree worse thanks to being a degree poorer, but I've grown more cynical over the years, so I think I can handle it :3
