You clearly have no idea about the situation here. The referendum had a big majority of Westminster constituencies vote Leave. Any MP who defies their constituents on something this big will get voted out in the next election and replaced by an MP who will deliver.

The point of the court case was to make it clear that the British government cannot remove rights given to us by Parliament, by decree (royal prerogative).

Only Parliament can affect the rights of British citizens. Parliament is sovereign.

This is exactly what people voted for, the sovereignty of the British Parliament. If you don't think the Commons will respect the will of the people in this then maybe that's why your countries have never achieved the long-term stability of the UK.

Parliament will trigger article 50, the government knows it has a clear majority and ministers have already said this. The only real difference for the government is that they now have to consider some amendments proposed by various parties. That is only right and proper, since the representatives of the British people should all have their say in something this important

You don't have to trust them to know they'll pass it. The Conservative party has to pass it at this point or they'll split up. There's probably a good few Labour MPs who support leaving too, with a few who said to remain actually supporting leave.

I would put money on Jeremy Corbyn voting to leave in the referendum. Trust doesn't come in to it.

Jeremy Corbyn has already instructed his party to pass it. A good chunk of Labour will defy him and vote against, but that doesn't matter, you only need a small number of Labour votes to ensure the majority is won.

Trust DOES come into it, we're trusting our political institutions to reflect the will of the people. It only seems obvious to us that this will pass because our institutions are relatively uncorrupted. So our views will be reflected in Parliament, despite them being contrary to the Establishment's wishes just several months ago.

Unfortunately, many people in many other countries would not have our level of confidence in Parliament/Congress to represent their views

Yes. The majority of Labour constituencies actually voted Leave in the referendum. There are what, around 200 Labour seats at the moment? I would estimate at least 50 Labour MPs voting with the government. At least. There will be Conservative rebels but not that many, that party will rally behind the PM. Only a few people like Ken Clarke will break ranks.

The only 100% sure to be voting against the government are the Lib Dems and SNP, and I guess the Green MP too.

Westminster constituencies =/= popular vote

Totally different ball game.

The Remain vote was concentrated in a smaller number of constituencies (in urban areas) whereas the Leave vote was more distributed. The number of constituencies voting Leave was in the 400s, out of 650 in total.

FPTP gives the strongest constituent-MP bond out of all voting systems, at the expense of proportionality. And besides, our government gave us the option of ditching FPTP and we voted in a large majority to keep it.

They are, but Remainer turnout was much higher in these fewer urban constituencies. For example you had turnout of around 80% in places like Hackney and Islington which voted overwhelmingly for Remain.

Outside the cities, you had mostly smaller margins for Leave (say, 60% or so), but over a larger number of constituencies

FPTP leads to increasing polarization, as is now visible in UK and US, precisely because of the lack of proper representation. It's also very vulnerable to cheating like gerrymandering.
So you're fucked either way, because if your parliament does indeed vote to trigger article 50, the United Kingdom will soon become the Divided Kingdom with Scotland, NI and maybe even London leaving.

Increasing polarisation? A few decades ago you had 90% of the country voting for only 2 parties, now, it's only 60-70%.

>It's also very vulnerable to cheating like gerrymandering.
Wrong, there's only Gerrymandering in the USA, and this is due to powerful of US state governors who can re-draw constituency borders in some states.

This cannot happen in the UK since we have an independent Boundary Commission which decides these things. Boundaries are only redrawn to keep populations approximately equal. FPTP doesn't come into it.

>So you're fucked either way, because if your parliament does indeed vote to trigger article 50, the United Kingdom will soon become the Divided Kingdom with Scotland, NI and maybe even London leaving.

That's just bollocks. The SNP's independence prospects are looking weaker than before the referendum. And there's no way NI is leaving, the most trouble we'll have there is sorting out what happens with the border, but that's resolvable.

You keep worrying about the UK breaking up if you want, what you should be worrying about is the stability off the Eurozone, because if there's trouble there then Germany is more fucked than anyone else

We're not talking about how the votes were counted. It wasn't a general election, so the Westminster constituencies weren't officially tallied, it was all local authorities.

But if you DO overlay the referendum vote with Westminster constituencies, you get a clear majority going for Leave, because of the pattern I mentioned. Here you go:

https://medium.com/@chrishanretty/the-eu-referendum-how-did-westminster-constituencies-vote-283c85cd20e1#.i83pi6zhu

I meant in the UK you had this vast majority voting for only 2 parties, and only we have more parties in the mix. So if you look at it like that the country is less polarised
>>
>>70336767
Oh I see. But these new parties aren't properly represented because of FPTP. Surely this must lead to more disenfranchisement, since in the parliament it's still the same old Labour vs Tory even though your electorate has as much a differentiated view about matters as ours.

It might just work. There's an ancestral fear of Maggie amongst the EU bureaucrats

>Oh I see. But these new parties aren't properly represented because of FPTP. Surely this must lead to more disenfranchisement, since in the parliament it's still the same old Labour vs Tory even though your electorate has as much a differentiated view about matters as ours.

They ARE properly represented, they are not *proportionally* represented, because it is not a proportional system (and neither is yours, by the way).

All parties play by the same rules. The reason parties like UKIP have so few seats is because their MPs and their party aren't popular enough to win majorities in the 650 constituencies of the UK, except a couple.

The winner-takes-all aspect might stop gradual change, but it also gives the public the power to inflict sudden landslide change when a party reaches certain levels of unpopularity. Look at what happened to Labour in Scotland. Look at what happened to the Liberals around the time of WW1.

And the way things are going now, pay attention to what happens to Labour in the next election. FPTP gives greater expression to the public when they're really fed up with, or enthusiastic for, a particular party.

With the proportional vote systems it's almost impossible to get rid of some politicians, especially if they're on a List vote. There are no truly safe seats with FPTP
