There is no need for reproduction of kanji.
It's a lot if work for very little gain. Even native people hardly ever write by hand anymore. And it will take at least twice as long to learn them, probably longer.

Knowing how to write hiragana is good enough.

I always say my card out loud before pressing to show answer, so I can't cheat myself and think "hey, that's the pronunciation I was thinking about!". When you say it the sheer contrast of hearing the answer differing will give you the Right or Wrong feeling.

I wrote my Anki reps up to 7k words, but now I don't anymore, because I want to keep my daily reviews under 60 minutes and my review numbers are too high for that shit.

But it was pretty useful, I have a great deal of comfort handwriting nowadays.

I will get back to practicing writing when I study radicals and start to memorize how to write them, not only how to recognize them. Writing mindlessly during reps doesn't do much good in this stroke memorization department.

Okay, I've been doing this for about two weeks, and I guess I can now vouch for it:

If you get at least word's pronunciation OR meaning correctly, and it's a word you've just learned yesterday (meaning this is your first review of it), press space and listen to the sample sentence, without reading the answer. If you can guess its meaning, you can safely press Easy and consider it a pass.

When it shows up again 3 days later you'll end up remembering it and it helps to keep that card's ease curve not so flat from the get go, meaning it won't show up excessively and your total number of repetitions won't skyrocket as much.

I'm finally out of the 240-260 reps a day, starting to enter the 220-230 zone.

Today I had 281, but that's because I fucked up big time a while ago.

What would you say helped you the most in preparing? I've got N3, wrapped up all my N2 grammar points/vocab, and starting the grind on an N1 deck. Wondering if I should take N2 or just keep going until N1.

I never took any other JLPTs so I can't really say how big the differences between levels are, but I'd say you should definitely go for the N1 if you already feel like you've got the N2 down. I was also kinda uncertain whether I shoul take N2 or N1, but because I felt that I would be sure to pass the N2 and was already partially familiar with N1 vocab and grammar, I took the leap and studied a lot and in the end passed with flying colours.

I know it's been repeated to death, but going through the Kanzen Master books will prep you a lot. Also just general reading of compelling content you like. I read the Psychiatrist Irabu series (Kuuchuu Buranko is based on those books) and Boku to Tsundere to Heidegger last fall before the test just to familiriaze me with reading something on paper without the ability to rikai everything and it must have been pretty darn effective since I got full points for reading.

This book is very engaging to me. It follows Sean, an american, on his adventure in Japan.

It's way easier to stay committed to than something like tae kim, because the activities are engaging. You can see in the picture "please try to invite a friend".

Initially, I guess. My first experience with kanji was through RTK, so through that process I generally became familiar with how to write kanji by memory (a lot of it has gone stale due to general lack of writing these days, but it doesn't take long to get back into the swing of it) but now it's more a matter of scrawling out characters without much thought. It developed a kind of shorthand within itself.
I'll have a look for my notebook which was used for kanji reps while I was writing them out for kanji reps in anki. See if I can get a decent enough photo.

It's really just a matter of efficiency. If you already know the language and can read is, learning how to write it easy.

Besides, stroke order is pretty consistent, if you can remember what radicals a kanji is made out of, you should be able to write most kanji you already know without problems.

How hard is it to get selected for the JET program? I was told that the number of candidates that get selected depends on the year. How often do you guys practice Japanese?

I've been slacking on and off for about two years now. I think I'm gonna stick to 3 hours a day and hope to become fluent in 5 to 6 months.

My practice mostly consist of listening (from anime) transcribing and collecting vocab and grammar. Also reading manga and mining from there as well.

Yeah, that's the thing we people: we tend to say a lot of contradictory things.

Japanese takes a fair of reading to really start to comes to terms with it. Two months isn't exactly a long period of time.
That said, the thing with reviewing/drilling/whatever vocab in Anki, using vocabulary decks such as the Core decks is that your context is limited to the example sentences and so it is more that you become generally acquainted with the words, enough to not have to look them up so much when coming across them "in the wild". You will still have to read them countless times in various contexts to really start to come to terms with how they are used.

Give it another few months and if you are still struggling with reading, maybe introduce the DoJG Anki deck into your Anki time. It is going to be frustrating for at least another four or five months, regardless. This is something that you'll eventually get used to.

Why aren't there Japanese textbooks that teach in a progressive reading approach? Seems like all grammar texts throw a bunch of grammatical terms at you in short chapters before moving onto the next. It's kinda shit.

Other languages have books that will slowly introduce grammar and vocab through lots of reading and translating, while giving you clear explanations for everything. It's generally a longer process, but it's far more thorough and engaging. I've looked for something like this in Japanese but I've had no luck. The closest I could find are the Japanese graded readers, but they obviously lack the grammar and vocabulary explanations; you'd have to get those elsewhere, which would be a pain in the rear.

If I'm early on in the core 10k, should I pay attention to pitch accent but not really worry about it until later when I do listening?

That's pretty much what I do right now - try to remember the pitch accent, but grade based on definition/furigana correctness.

妻・つま・wife is an ideogrammic compound of a 肀 hand on a brush being put to paper 一・いち only once and writing 女・おんあ a woman's name. The kanji is symbolic of a marriage certificate.

靴 has been covered previously.

磨く・みがく・polish/scour is an ideogrammic compound of a 麻 hemp cloth being used to 磨く polish a 石 gemstone. 麻・あさ・hemp shows 木・き trees or plants growing beneath the shade of a 广 dotted cliff. 石 ・いし・stone shows a 口 stone or cave entrances under a 厂 cliff, which later distorted into 丆.

ピカピカ is an onomatopoeia of shiny. You know when are polishing a shoe and it goes 'squeak squeak', that is what ピカピカ is supposed to represent.

いつも always.

くれる is a special verb which means 'to give', is the the same as あげる・to give, with one distinction. In Japanese society it is important to show respect to others, the priority of respect is others (third party) -> family members -> yourself. Based on this system, you use くれる when you ONLY need to show respect to the giver, otherwise you use あげる.

For example:

3rd party A は 3rd party B に車をあげました。・A gave a car to B. (show respect to both, because they are both outsiders)
Aは妹に車をくれました。・3rd party A gave a car to my little sister (妹・いもうとう・woman and immature tree 女 + 未). (outsider (giver) is higher respect level than sister)
ちちはAにコーヒーをあげました。・My Father gave a coffee to A. (father is above your standing, so you need to show respect to both)
妹は私にコーヒーをくれました。・My little sister gave a coffee to me. (even though she is your little sister, you don't show respect to yourself (rude))
私はちちにコーヒーをあげました。・I gave a coffee to my father. (Can't くれる this one because it would set your level above your fathers, so あげる)

This comes up very commonly in everyday conversations, so its important to keep in mind to be polite.

妻は・wife (subject) ・いつも靴をピカピカに・always shoes shiny ・磨いてくれます。polish give (give a good polish)

静かに出て下さい。・しずかにでてください・Please leave quietly.

静か has been covered in a previous lesson.

I have touched on 出る・でる・exit briefly in the past. 出 is an ideogrammic compound of a 屮 sprout in a 凵 container. Related meanings include go out, come out and protrude. Old Chinese pronunciation of 出 was chhut from the Min Nan, which lends to the on reading of 出・シュツ.

静かに・quietly ・出て下さい。leave please.

土筆・つくし has two meanings, based on the same idea. 土筆 refers to field horsetail or equisetum arvense, a herbaceous perennial plant which looks kinda like a 筆 writing brush upside down or coming out of the 土 ground. 筆 shows a 手 holding a brush and drawing a 一 line on paper. The lines on top 竹 represent bamboo, which writing brushes were traditionally made of in China (compare with 書く to write).

The other meaning is a wooden stick with a burned tip comes from the practice of burning field horsetail and using it as a brush for sketches. When the horsetail is fertile it creates a nice little bushy tail for drawing.

As far as readings go, it can be read as つくし or どひつ, つくし being from an older archaic version of つくづく. The つくし reading is derived from 狂言・きょうげん a form of Japanese comic theatre, hence the special reading.

Because a beginner like you is going to have a ton to talk about with your zero vocabulary and shit for grammar, right? Even if you manage to say anything at all, it will have terrible pitch accent and be english thoughts -> the mangled japanese equivalent and sound terribly unnatural. It's setting yourself up for failure from the very beginning.

The four skills of reading, listening, writing, and speaking ought to be viewed in that order, because each one feeds the next. You can’t say what you don’t know, and reading is much easier to learn words from than listening. The large quantity of exposure helps the learner to think in the target language, which in turn improves output abilities.

Forcing yourself to output from the very start is putting your cart before horse, and very likely to build bad habits unless your teacher is correcting LITERALLY everything you and your classmates say. They're not going to, because even if they somehow had the time time, it would be "too discouraging", and will pelt you with false praise instead.

Seconding this so hard as someone who took to classes and language exchange right away and wasted about a year and a half really learning nothing but scattered information.

I still take the class though because it's fun, they only use hiragana and romaji though still. I was learning kanji scribbles from the get go.

Through the class I got access to some Japanese people, friends of friends, who I am now benefiting from in conversation.

The class helped me bring out of my shell a bit though and get better at socializing.

No ragrets.
