The reason people could get a job with only a high school diploma back then was that A) automation wasn't as advanced back then, human jobs were much simpler and B) the rest of the world was in ruins from WW2, we literally had no competition, so we had a huge industrial advantage in being able to manufacture things for the rest of the world. Now the rest of the world is more developed, so it's not really a bad thing that work is harder today, because it means less people are poor overall.
