Irish was more widely spoken before they become Independent. Now literally nobody speaks it.

As far as i know at the beginning of the 20th century before Ireland became independent only in the west side of the country was Irish commonly spoken. So it was not that widely spoken.
Reminder that Ireland is rightful British clay - they are part of the British Isles and still would be part of the union if Catholicism didn't divide us.
