first worlders have cats because they live alone, go to work, and think rightly that it is cruel to leave the dog alone 10 hours, while a cat has no such problem.

in the third world you will usually have some member of your extended family at home to walk or feed the dog.
dogs are also used as alarms in dangerous third world countries.

this doesnt mean cats arent popular. many of the dog owners will also have cats.
