Well, there was a time when communism had not been actually tried in any form.
The poor people generally lived like shit because all the things communism pressured capitalist societies into implementing didn't exist.
8 hour work days, minimum wage, collective bargaining, wealth redistribution, social safety nets and so on
The failure of the USSR to provide good living conditions for it's people killed belief in the model that was implemented.
Yet, we're seeing a similar wide dissatisfaction as free capitalism has gone too wild and the poor workers are once again looking for a change in the system.
Modern commies aren't the ones waving the red flag, those are romantics.

The Soviets didn't win because they had some superior ideology, they simply had the man power and manufacturing capabilities. The whole point of Germany invading the USSR, was to take that manufacturing capabilty so in order to do that, Germany utilised it's superior trained and equipped army in the hopes to quickly knock out the disorganised, under equipped Soviets but they stalled and lost the momentum and allowed the Soviets to get the better of them.

In terms of policy though and pursuing collectivization and industrialization, Stalin was far more brutal. Those along with dekulakization lead to major famines across the Soviet Union. If Hitler could devastate France and a small country like Finland could defend against the Soviets, than it seemed only logical that the Germans thought taking the USSR was well within their capability. T34's were cheap and could be manufactured quickly but that's why Hitler hoped he could swiftly destroy the Soviets before they could produce them in sizeable numbers to counter them. Either way, it's hard to determine whether the Germans would've been successful or not in taking Moscow if they had prioritised it.
