No law degree - my dad has a law degree from Oxford, which is how he got involved in legal publishing in the first place, but I just have a psychology degree (from Exeter). I'm guessing if you wanted this job and didn't have any family contacts then a law or English degree would be important, but really the most important thing is good command of the English language and attention to detail. It really is just sifting through the documents and making sure that grammatical or spelling rules are (a) correct and (b) applied consistently throughout. So you don't really need a degree at all, being a keen reader is more important imo.

Depends what you mean by hard. My predicted grades were all As, my personal statement must have been ok, so the offers I got from unis were either AAA or AAB (although one uni, St Andrew's, rejected me). Not particularly hard, and definitely easier than for subjects like law or medicine (which have their own, separate, entrance exams), but maybe for people who struggle with exams it would be difficult.

Unfortunately, one of the side-effects of proofreading for a living means that I am often too tired to read for pleasure afterwards, so I've not been reading as much as I like to. At the moment I'm reading Bill Bryson's 'The Road to Little Dribbling' and enjoying it, so if you enjoy reading books about yanks exploring British culture, then that's what you should go for.

The entrance exam is pretty much solely problem solving and abstract thinking (supposedly you shouldn't be able to revise for it, but there's ridiculously expensive courses that people do to learn methods that defeat the whole point of the exam). The actual course itself isn't that difficult, it's just the sheer volume of stuff to learn. I've got pretty good memory and reasonable problem solving/guesswork skills, so I can generally get by without much work - although I struggle with the practical and communications stuff 'cause autism. A lot of the people who answer all the questions in tutorials and study ridiculous amounts get low grades or fail 'cause all they do is rote learn with no abstract thinking - often wonder how they managed to pass the UKCAT or BMAT.

it doesn't really make them top tier though. there's this big push now for uni's to interview with the intention of weeding out complete assburgers from the degree because this isn't house m.d. and you can't be a proficient doctor while being a complete assburger. however, not all uni's are doing that. some don't even interview while others take into account charity work and shit like that.

that's all well and good, however australian medical schools work on an equal accreditation system which means a degree from the worst med school in the country is identical to a degree from the best. from there, any attempts at specialisation require that your school be hidden so to avoid old boy networks.

so essentially we've hordes of spergs, suck ups, and normal people intermixed with no real benchmark whatsoever.
