It's primarily used for freight.

Travelling by train is slow and isn't as cheap as it should be. I travelled from Manitoba to BC on a train in October. The train was 9 fucking hours late getting to Vancouver. Freight trains always have the right of way so passenger trains have to yield for freight trains all the damn time.

It was pretty comfy though. Everyone should take the train through the Rockies at least once.
