With an average of 184cm you'd expect the Netherlands to be full of giants. I'm 194cm tall and when I visited it I didn't feel "short" or even average. It's like every single Dutch is 1.84m with the exception of few people towering above 2m like in any other country.

I think that's because for quite a few people their experience isn't congruent with the data. Same for me. I'm 185cm, yet 80% of guys I meet on a daily basis are taller than me.

i took the liberty of drawing some lines on the graph to visualize how wrong you are. the colorful lines represent changes in heights during the last century. the longer the line, the bigger the increase in height. the shaded diagonal which i added conforms to a difference of 2cm. as you can clearly see, with the notable exceptions of marshall islands and south africa, literally every country in the world has had an increase of more than 2cm in average height. and many if not most have had an increase of 10cm or even more (note the added vertical lines marking the 160cm, 170cm and 180cm points respectively)

you're somewhat right tho. the height difference between two generations is marginal if people choose to parent children in their early adulthood keeping the generation gap ~20 years or so. but what happens if you take into account that many people only have children in their 30s or even 40s? all of a sudden you get larger gaps in environmental factors so the height differences become more prominent and in fact 'the older generation' will be noticeably shorter.
